Tuscany by Car

Hi,

We are driving from Rome to Levanto in April. Does anyone know know the cost of gas per liter? ALso, anyone familiar with the A1 toll road pricing? We have a choice to drive along the coast or to go via the A1 (through Florence), and are not in any hurry, so which would be better? We are staying 2 nights in Levanto, Lucca, and Siena, ( all in B&B's) then off to Civitavecchia for the last night prior to an E. Med. cruise.

Any driving pointers or sight seeing musts would be greatly appreciated, as we have been to Florence, Milan, Venice, Capri, and Naples (on tour years ago) and wish to enjoy the Tuscan Sun!

Current gas price at the ubiquitous Kuwait oil co stations in Italy is about 1.25 - 1.30 Euro per liter, or $USD 7/gallon.

Just curious: Why you are driving first to Levanto. Why don't you drive from Rome to Siena, taking a scenic route, then to Lucca, then to Levanto and then to Civitiavecchia?

Also, must you stay in Civitavecchia the last night? There are more fascinating towns a stone's throw from there, like Tarquinia, or lots smaller ones. What time must you be at the dock?

Thanks for the replies! I am grateful for the information about gas and tolls.

This is our 25th wedding anniversary trip and when I asked my husband what he wanted to do.... it was a week's road trip in Tuscany with 2 nights in Cinque Terre Park. As it is impossible to stay in the Park with a car, we are staying in Levanto. And, since we board our ship around 11-noon, it would be too far a drive from Levanto to Civitavecchia.

My op was for a cruise to the E. Med. including Istanbul and Athens, so we sail out of Civitavecchia on May 3rd. I will investigate Tarquinia (actually, I did a brief look there) based upon your suggestion.

You can get a direct, high speed train from La Spezia to Civitavecchia - 3hrs.

Looks like there are departures every 2 hrs at 8:06am, 10:06, etc. all day.

You could drop off your car in La Spezia, visit Cinque Terre, then take the train to your cruise.

Thanks... I will investigate this for sure!

You can save 11€ (2nd cl) or 15€ (1st cl) per person by taking the slower IC train. Travel time is 15 minutes longer.

You might check out this place as an alternative to staying right in Civitavecchia, especially if you keep the car:

and here are other options:

Again, many thanks. Since we plan to stay in either Siena or Civitavecchia or Levanto the night prior to the cruise, we do not have the time for this cooking class.... but a great option for some.
