izzofan - the name of the B&B in Sorrento is Villa Monica, number one B&B on tripadvisor, and very inexpensive to boot.

Even though I am not Bob, I would like to recommend Hotel Casci in Firenze, a small B&B run by a lovely family who take care of their guests as if they were their own family. I have been there 5 times to date and would never think of staying anywhere else in Florence.

Important Message for Izzofan:
We received your enquiries, we tried several times to reply to your e-mails but our servers, for some strange reasond, seem to not communicate and we have always our e-mails back with a message of failure.
I wrote on google your e-mail address and I found it on a page of Fodors corresponding to the account "Izzofan". Please send us another e-mail address ( better if international @gmail.com/@yahoo.com)where we can send our reply to your request of availability .
I apologize for the unusual way to contact you, but I didn't find another way ( no phone/fax number or address in your e-mail):=)

thanks Locanda (your email came through!)

Now I am conflicted:

many Posters advised me to stay in Sorrento rather than AC proper due to our time of stay: Oct 30-Nov 3 since Positano/Amalfi are "closed" a lot as to restaurants/hotels and transportation
Our budget BTW is 185E max /night

In Sorrento: anyone prefer either of these?

Villa Monica (#1 on TA) highly recommended by some posts; no frills but seaview and high on hill , needing owner to drive us to town
and gorgeous Magi House in town:no seaview but gorgeous rooms

We do plan to daytrip to Capri and visit the 3 towns in AC; maybe hit Paestum if we add a day to the trip there

Had planned to stay in Positano or Amalfi, but accomodations are sparse then and prices quite high for not great places.

Do you think a mistake to stay in Sorrento and just visit each town (Amalfi/Pos./Rav) each day via bus or private driver?
we will ultimately leave and head to ROme, getting early start so as to spend 4 hrs or so in Pompeii.
Please advise!!!

If your orientation will be to the AC then stay in Positano. If you plan to see Naples, Pompeii and Capri then Sorrento is fine It is the perpetual dilema. Here is Positano:

BOB’S FAVORITE HOTELS ON THE AMALFI COAST

POSITANO: 3 STAR HOTELS---150 TO 250E FOR DOUBLE—AVERAGE 170E

1. www.villarosapositano.it Popular B&B with great views—lots of steps

2. www.hotelcaliforniapositano.it Small hotel near above—great terrace

3. www.casalbertina.it Fabulous views but you will need good legs

4. www.villalatartana.it Good value, lower in town but still good views

5. www.larosadeiventi.net Has apts. in the old town---more private

POSITANO: 4 STAR HOTELS---200 TO 350E FOR TYPICAL DOUBLE

6. www.bucadibacco.it On the beach—nice hotel and great food

7. www.hotelposeidonpositano.it Hard to beat in this price range

8. www.puntaregina.com Great views in the old town[ fornillo]

9. www.palazzomurat.it Good centro location—historic site

Other locations in the region:

1. www.hotelantichemura.com/ Convenient 4 star in heart of Sorrento

2. http://www.villamaria.it/ Lovely 4 star in Ravello with terrific food

If you decide to stay in Sorrento this hotel is perfectly located for train travel. You get off the train and it's a few hundred yards on the left, all downhill with luggage. Plus it's a very nice hotel. www.hotelantichemura.com

My only comment would be to correct your idea that restaurants and hotels in Amalfi proper will be closed in late October. Not true.

I know I'm late at the party... but still early enough for October 2011, it would seem.
One striking glitch in your schedule is Siena: with merely half a day, you could as well skip it altogether. Personally, I already knew most of Siena's sights from a much earlier trip when I went back two and a half years ago, so just wanted to refresh and deepen my impression, and I thought I was going to have a relaxed time assigning one full day to it. Wrong, wrong, wrong! I didn't even see everything I wanted to; would have needed one and a half days. Already knowing the basic sights, mind you! So you need two full days there - Siena is a great place, and very rich in first-class sights.
To make up for it, I wouldn't hesitate to skip Volterra. Certainly a pretty enough town, but as zeppole said, there are so many others...
Between Chiusi and Orvieto, I would choose Chiusi, just because everybody else would choose Orvieto. Which means that in Orvieto, you'd meet them all, while you'd have Chiusi for yourself. The sights are great in both towns (very different, of course: Chiusi is about Etruscan antiquity, Orvieto primarily about Gothic architecture). If you choose Chiusi, don't fail to book your tickets for the Tomba della Scimmia well in advance.
