Tuscany Agenda
 

Hello,
We just booked a flight to Pisa for 2 weeks in Tuscany/Liguria. We visited Tuscany several years ago and visited most of the "must see" sites (Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Chianti, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, ect). On this trip we are planning on driving from Pisa Airport to Volterra for 5 nights, (day trips from there). Then to Lerici, for 4 nights (day trips), Lucca for 4 nights, and then wrap up with 2 nights in Pisa (fly home from Pisa). We will have a rental car and plan on staying in apartments in all 4 locations.

Any thoughts, ideas, recommendations for undiscovered towns/villages, vineyard tastings, restaurants?

Not far from Volterra, we came upon Certaldo by chance and enjoyed a nice lunch and an afternoon of exploring. The town is on the Via Francigena route between Canterbury and Rome. There is a modern-ish town and the medieval hilltown above, connected by funicular.

Not far from Lucca are Castelnuovo di Garfagna and Montecatini Terme. The road between CdG and the coast (Massa) is very scenic if you have the time. Better east to west, and a little more than halfway on SP13 is a small chapel right on the side of the road commemorating partisans and civilians who fought and died at this pass in the last months of WWII. Montecatini Terme is an interesting contrast of Belle Epoque spa town and medieval hilltown, connected by funicular.

Very helpful, info from insiders is so important as opposed to travel books and internet sites....as a WWII history buff I really appreciate the info on the chapel.
