Tuscany
I will be staying in Florence for 3 nights. What are some good day trips from Florence besides Pisa. What are some towns that should not be missed. I would like to visit the countryside in Tuscany. We will not have a car, so we will have to travel by train and bus.

Siena, there should be easy connections from Florence and it's a don't miss in my opinion.

Hi Lori,
Better than Pisa are Lucca and Siena for the day. Take the no.7 bus from the train station to Fiesole - 20 min. You can see the Etruscan ruins, tour the town, watch the sun set from the terrace of the Bar Blu, have dinner. |
PS,
With only 3 nights in Florence, I wouldn't suggest a trip to Pisa. |
I use train travel each and every time I go to Italy. From Florence, it is a quick 20 minute train ride into Fiesole, just outside of Florence. Very beautiful, tranquil place loaded with Roman antiquity, shops, nice restaurants, etc.
Another suggestion for a day trip would be to go to Lucca. It is a lovely, friendly city. A walk around its impressive city walls, along with exploration of its many fascinating sites, makes Lucca one of my most favorite places to visit each time I go to Italy. Also, another suggestion would be to try and go see Volterra, the Etruscan town known for its famous alabaster. You can take a train there, then bus up the hill into town. |
