Tuscany - 1 night - Where to stay?

I'm thinking about renting a scooter from Florence and exploring through the Chianti Road for 2 days. What's the best town/accommodation to stay in? Are there castles or vineyards out there that are pretty affordable to say for just 1 night, early September?

Many of the official Italian youth hostels are in historic buildings, and you can get a private room (usually you have to book well in advance for this). There are numerous locations all through Italy.

THanks, WillTravel. But, I looking for something a bit more "special" in the Tuscan region for my honeymoon. I'm not a huge wine fan, but want to enjoy the view and the history. Do you have any recommendations of which town to stay in?

Lil, you might like to look at SlowTrav.com because the Italy coverage there is exceptional (also the associated board SlowTalk.com ).

I didn't realize it was your honeymoon. Even I wouldn't typically suggest a hostel for that .

What do you mean by affordable?

I'm not quite sure what average prices are out there. Affordable = up to $130 at night?? I'll check out SlowTrav. It seems like they've covered a bunch of material. Thanks so much!!

Ah, Youth (I presume)! Newlyweds traveling for two days in Tuscany/Chianti on a single (?) scooter...

Do not drink and "drive." Penalties in Italy are severe.

Greve is an easy drive to and from Florence and makes good base (as does many other towns).
Make your choice based on the place you stay at. We like Podere Torre in Greve. great views (it's in a vineyard),very nice rooms a bargain at $100 or so.

Hi Lilj,

Having driven in Chianti, I would not want to drive a scooter there! It's hilly with winding roads. You might need a little more power and a lot more protection.

Congratulations and buon viaggio!

My suggestion for one night would be Siena.

Question for you--would you still explore on a scooter if it rains? If not, you should have a backup plan.
