Tuscan towns -where to overnight to minimize lugging luggage

Next spring I would like to see some of the Tuscan towns - Lucca, Assisi, Siena, San Gimignano, Montepulciano... Spent time in Florence this March - would probably fly into Florence and spend a night since I am really not in the mood for more travel on my first day. I would like to overnight in one or two towns to have a different experience but would like to minimize schlepping bags all over the place every day or so. What kind of itinerary would you suggest for overnights? I would probably be there 9 days. Thanks!

Unless you are driving you will need to understand your public transport options. I would base in Assisi and Siena given 9 days, but see Lucca from Florence.

Travelling by public transport, once I stayed at Lucca for 4 nights for touring northern Tuscany, Siena 4 nights for the south, since both have good bus networks.

You could visit Assisi as daytrip from Siena too, for bus schedule, please check:www.turismoverde.com.

If you like to visit Umbria area(where Assisi located),Perugia is an ideal base as with better bus/train connections.

I will not have a car - will use train/buses. I realize Assisi is not Tuscany but it seems to be a short enough train ride and I would like to see it.
