Turkish Dollars in Greek?
We are having our honeymoon in Greece ...trying to find anyway to save a bit of money - Some of our friends said that some places in Greece take Turkish currency as well as the Euro - is this true ?
If so do you know what islands? We are staying in Santorini and Crete ...
Many thanks

If I were you I wouldn't count on it. Some exchange businesses or banks might, but considering the unstable Turkish economy you'd probably lose more in the exchange process than if you deal only with the Euro. The ongoing bad relationship between Greece and Turkey won't help any, either.

Your friends are either pulling your leg or giving you really bad advice. I suppose it is possible that some of the Greek islands really close to the Turkish coast might take Turkish currency, but I sure wouldn't count on it. (Neither Santorini nor Crete would fall into that category.)
We could barely get the Greeks to acknowledge that there was a country called Turkey just a few nautical miles away, and in Turkey our requests to buy a map of Greece were met with complete incomprehension.
As mentioned above, "the ongoing bad relationship" is a key factor.

It is a very bad idea. Even IF the odd merchant would accept T. lira - you can bet he would make the exchange rate greatly in his own favor.
(These are probably the same sort of friends who say to use $US for tips and small purchases. They don't know what they're talking about)

Even if they DID take Turkish currency, they are not likely to give it anything GREATER than its true value and probably quite likely to give it less. It's difficult to understand where the savings would come in. One Euro equals 1,856,003 Turkish Lira today so it's not the most user-friendly thing to be dealing with anyway. When you are traveling in countries that use the Euro, you should plan on using Euros.
