Turkey- which areas to visit
I am planning a trip in May. I know I want to go to Cappadocia and Ephesus.
My question is when in the Ephesus area I was thinking of visiting Aphrodisia and Pamukkae is it worth the drive? I would be hiring a guide/driver from that day. I could spend one or possibly two more days during my visit to Ephesus by touring different sights. Which of these should I visit? -Prience-Miletus-Didyma -Sardis and surrounding area -Feithiye (may have a music festive during this time) |
You might want to take a look at my trip report; click on my name to find it. We rented a car in Izmir and then visited Ephesus, and saw Aphrodisias, Pammukale on our way to Cappadocia.

If you are 85, you should just sit in your hotel and rest for a day after visiting Ephesus.
If you are very young and like music festivals and do not mind the expense of car rental and driving 5-6 hours each way to Fethiye, you may do that. If you prefer shorter drives and larger numbers of smaller antique sites on a long day, you may prefer PMD with Dogan Bey and Dilek Lagoon and Park thrown in for some interesting nature and natural science museum. If you wish to see the entrance to Hades to prepare yourself for the inevitable, you should visit Hieropolis and combine it with aged female tourists hoping to look like Cleopatra by swimming in her pool at Pamukkale. If You will be disappointed when you do not find Aphrodite, do not go to Aphrodisias. Sardis should interest Jewish visitors and the environs, those interested in rural Turkey and Ottoman history. If all of the above are true, stay an extra week. |
do not go to Aphrodisias.
Aphrodisias was less crowded than Ephesus or Pamukkale, and had an interesting combination of excavated locations. I would not leave it out if traveling between Ephesus and Pamukkale. |
Michael, why do you contradict yourself? Or was it Aphrodite?

Otherchelebi,
Cute correlation between sights and ones expectations and interests. Question: Is Aphrodisias more interesting then PDM? Are there a lot of winding curves in the road to Aphrodisias? I can get car sick. How bad is it? |
Two hours of motorway or divided highway, than 30-40 minutes winding country road from Selcuk to Aphrodisias.
I cannot really tell. They are all interesting in their own way and very different. Aphrodisias is one large city. The others are small remains of something that was large, so leave more to imagination. My wife and I usually enjoy what we see and feel no regrets for having missed others. I recommend the same. |
why do you contradict yourself?
How do I contradict myself? |
Yes, Michael
