Turkey or Malta: are they cheaper alternatives compared to other European countries?
 

I'm wondering if vacationing in Malta or Turkey would be much more economical than somewhere that uses the Euro. I'm looking at going in mid-June, from the U.S. I definitely want some beach/water time, so that's why I thought these might be good locations.

With the dollar weakening against the Euro, is it also weakening against the currencies used in Malta & Turkey?

Turkey is cheaper (if you can find a cheap enough flight), and you'd probably enjoy it.

Turkey is a wonderful country. We have vacationed there a number of times. Last time, we flew into Istanbul and flew home from Athens. The people are wonderful, the country is varied, and it is very economical. We tend to stay in small family run hotels or pensions. Public transportaition -especially inter city buses- is very good and very inexpensive. The Med coast is very beautiful-we usually end up taking a ferry to one of the Greek Islands. Favourite time to go...either May/early June or Sept/ealy October. Have not been to Malta...it is on our list.

Malta joined the EU in May 04 and as such now uses the Euro, however, the Lira Malta is still in use. The US$ is very weak against the LM. If you are looking for a destination strictly based on how far the US$ will go, Malta probably isn't in your travel plans. That said, if you are interested in history, want a peaceful, safe and relaxing destination, then consider Malta. Both Academic Tours and Amelia International offer trips to Malta at a great price. It's a long trip from the US (no direct flights, so you'll stop in Europe first, then connect to Malta), but well worth it. The Mediterranean is definitely a special place. Enjoy your trip, wherever you wind up.

Turkey is still better value and if you are interested in history, there are plenty of different ancient sites than anywhere else.... Dollar is down but still a bargain. today 1 Usd is about, 1,430.000 TL. you should use your chance to be a millionaire. Turkey is cutting six zeros off by the new year but old currancy will still valid for a year.
May june is really a good period for both cultural and beach holidays in Turkey.
