Amy somehow I missed your detailed response to my questions. Many thanks for the list of recommended hotels in Turin. As in the rest of the region, there seems to be a wealth of enticing options.

Just booked my flights! I am topping this so I can find it again soon..

ekscrunchy,
For deals on hotels in Turin for the weekend see http://www.turismotorino.org/index.p...p;navCmd=reset Henry |
Henry: That site is WONDERFUL! And there are deals at the GH Sitea, which (along with the GH Victoria), is my top choice so far. And the deals are good for the entire year, subject to availability. I will begin inquiring this week. Many thanks for posting this information.
The Sitea and the Victoria look to be very well situated. I looked at the NH Santo Stefano, recommended by Amy above, but the reviews on TA are not very good. Do those who know Turin agree that the Sitea and Victoria are in great locations? On our last morning, we will have to take the 7am airport bus to Malpensa (so early!) but we can take a taxi to the airport bus depot near the train station. Our return flight departs Milan at 11:50am. We could have flown out of Turin but that would have meant a connection in Paris, so I opted to fly JFK-MXP-JFK. I booked on Delta. |
Both hotels are in an excellent location, so close to one another it's difficult to recommend one over the other based on location alone.

Posting again to see if anyone here has an opinion on these two hotels:

I'd like to hear more about eating in Turin as well! I live in Turin, but my husband and I are always looking for a new restaurant to try. We're afraid to just try one without someone saying it's good first. (If we're going to go out to a restaurant and spend the money, we want it to be good!) I started a thread on Turin Restaurants a few months back...maybe we should try and revive it!

We stayed at Astoria, Via XX Settembre 4 (tlel 39 011 562 0653) for 2 nights.
It was not fancy but was less than $200 back in 2005. The staff were very polite and breakfast was the usual cold cuts, cereal and good breads. Now? Who knows. We were able to step out to a bus that went to historic district within 10 minutes. An easy walk back and about 15 to station. For an "authentic" dinner, we were sent to La Capannina, about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. You won't believe the meal we had-5 courses. We just told them what we liked and they went from there. We didn't try the boiled or baked trolleys until Bologne but they are spectacular also. Enjoy! |
Many thanks, TD..
I put some restaurant info on a separate thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35168581 |

When is your trip??
|
I just returned; we ended up at the GH Sitea which had an excellent weekend package for 153 Euro per night (rack rate is more than double that price) that included two Chocopasses.
I am sure we would have been fine at any number of hotels in Turin, including those mentioned above. The city is much smaller and more walkable than I had envisioned so location did not matter all that much. I will say, however, that I preferred the location of the Sitea to those closer to the train station, all else being equal. We also paid 18 euro per night to park our rental car in the tiny hotel lot. |
