Tulips in Holland - is May too late?

Hi Fodorites,
I am planning a trip in May, 2016, and one of my travel dreams is to see the tulips in season in Holland. I would love to visit Keukenhof, the seasonal tulip garden, but am worried that the timing will not be best.
Do any of you have experience visiting during tulip season? I would arrive in Amsterdam around the second or third week of May, 2016. Will this visit satisfy my dream of seeing the tulips??
Thank you for any advice you have!

It varies according to the temperatures, weather but we saw the tulip fields in full bloom around April 22 a few years ago, a spectacular sight.

Closes at may 16, so you'll be towards the end.

Been once, and it was splendid. We keep telling ourself 'next year we go back' and never succeed, for whatever reasons.

May easily be too late. I went April 25 one year and they were almost done - but it varies slightly year by year.

we have been in mid April and the beginning of May - the displays change according to the date that you go, but there should still be something to see - late tulips in particular - even in the second week of May.

but I would go as soon as you get there.

Pariswat - we have been twice with about 10 years in between visits.

It was well worth making the effort!
