Tubingen - a good place to visit
We are planning a trip to Germany and will be flying out of Stuttgart. Would Tubingen be an interesting place to visit for a day and last night as it looks like a short drive to the airport? If so, what are the sights and good hotels? Thanks!

hi there,
agree with above, Tuebingen is nice little town, but I'm not shure whether it is worth to do a daytrip from Stuttgart. If You want to spend Your last day perhaps take a look at Stuttgart itselfe. Or the things that You can reach easyly and cheap with the d-trains.
Esslingen: old houses and ruine
Plochingen: Hunderwasser-Haus
Bietigheim: old timberhouses
Ludwigsburg: bareque castle and town
Marbach: Schiller's birthplace

just ask for more infos

have fun
Gar

I spent a year at the University there and have been back to visit friends many times since. It is a great place so definitely include it! The best hotel is the Krone, right on the river in the middle of the Alt Stadt. Tuebingen looks like what you want Germany to look like! The Hohenzollern fortress is a must-see, and also be sure to have dinner, or on Sunday, lunch in Bebenhausen, a tiny village you can walk to that was an ancient and still basically intact monestary, and also were the present Germany was created after WWII. Hotel am Schloss is also nice, but beware--stairs only! It is right next to the castle. You can row on the river in nice weather. Stuttgart has a nice zoo and an important museum of 1200 to 1600 art but otherwise is very modern and not worth a visit IMO. Tuebingen is great for hikes in the woods, the hotels can tell you all about how to get to Bebenhausen thru the woods. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AT THE AIRPORT--BORING!!!!!

Jeff, thanks for saying nice things about Sindelfingen. I live there, but apart from the Daimler Chrysler tour - there's nothing here for the tourist, except a brilliant shopping centre called Breuninger.

If Asley is looking for "atmosphere" then, Tuebingen is the place. It's a bit like Heidelberg, with lots of students, theatre and cultural events.

Otherwise, Stuttgart has lots to offer, as you say: shops, zoo, cafes, pubs, opera, ballet, art galleries, cinemas, old castle open to the public, etc.

Just FYI Asley, Tuebingen has been voted the most desirable place to live in Germany for many years running.....and as I said in my last note, be sure to make the 30 minute drive to visit Hohenzollern fortress (which you can see perched ominously on the mountaintop behind the town)! For restaurants, Weinstube Forelle in the Altstadt has been there forever and is very charming. There are 2 wonderful restaurants in Bebenhausen, one has 2 Michelin stars. Don't skip Tuebingen! It is the second oldest university in Germany and the most prestigious in Europe for study of Medicine, Philosophy, etc. It has over 60 different clinics. Far more charming than Heidelberg which is too tourista. Just remember: do the Altstadt, Bebenhausen and Hohenzollern fortress. These are the highlights. I took my husband there for the first time this year and he adored it, and that was in January!
