"PADDINGTON STATION. Very convenient and short lines! You just need to check in within 2 hours of your flight."

Just to correct -- not "within" two hours of your flight, but more than two hours before your flight, to allow time for your baggage to make the trip without you. They're strict about that, as I discovered to my cost.

And fyi, when I told our checkin person how much we appreciated being able to check in at Paddington and avoid the awful lines at Heathrow, she asked us to be sure to tell BA. Apparently BA is looking at possibly cutting Paddington checkin service to save expenses... (Heathrow Express would be unaffected, natch.)

You are right. BA just announced the closing of Paddington station check-in desk. I believe it will happen on 31 July, but I'm not sure about that. That means, at least IMHO, that it's pretty much the end of check-in service at the train station. With all that room, I'm sure the station will lease the space to MickeyD, Starbuck, etc.etc...

AAFrequnetFlyer I'll defer, but all I did was walk 2 blocks to the train station and it took me to Heathrow.

Sheilab - the memory does sometimes get fuzzy - but just so we don't confuse boppiess . . .

First you said you took the tube - that is what I (and others) responded to. The tube does require two changes of lines, or one change if you go waaaay out of your way to Holborn

Now it seems you actually took the train - assume you mean from Paddington. Paddington is MUCH more than 2 blocks from Marble Arch. It is not a bad stroll on a nice Sunday morning, but way too far to walk with luggage in tow after landing at LHR.

Perhaps you were staying closer to Paddington than to Marble Arch.

Holborn is not waaaaaaaaaaaay away,it is
at the other end of Oxford Steet to Marble Arch(the tube map is not to scale)75 mins as opposed to 68 mins, but with all the changes on the other route,it is quicker & easier.Paddington is a short walk from Marble Arch, but as there are ample bus routes serving both, there is no point unless you want the exercise.Good Luck !

Thanks for discussion everyone. We'll probably take the train to Paddington and see how exhausted we are - we love to walk and the exercise might be good for us - otherwise, we'll get a ride somehow. Appreciate everyone's help!

Janis I agree that the memory gets fuzzy, but I stayed in this little B&B and it was two blocks from the tube. Now maybe this station is not the tube the way you use the word tube, but I used that station everyday that I was there and it took me eveywhere I wanted to go. Now what I remember about this station is that it was on the same block as a movie theatre and down the street was a large department store. If that rings a bell then maybe you cannot pinpoint what station that was, but I know this it took me straight to Heathrow.

In case anyone is still following this, I am back from London. We took the Heathrow express which was wonderful. Took 15 minutes - 11 pounds for adult, 5 pounds for a child age 15 or under. Trains run every 15 minutes - I loved it! We ended up walking from the Paddington station to the Marble Arch area which was a long walk with all of our suitcases, but we were still excited to be starting our trip and it worked out fine. On the way home, took a cab to Paddington (cost 5 pounds) and then the Heathrow express again - no hitches.
Thanks again for all of the advice!

I think you learned a valuable lesson: the more baggage you have, the cheaper cabs seem to be! Glad you had a great trip.
