Alitalia or Delta will have connecting flights to Florence from either Rome or Milan. We've done the NY to Milan to Florence several times and it is smooth and easy. To get to the train from Milan to Florence involves a bus connection to the train, someone I know has done this and it's a bit of a hassle. Have to claim luggage, run for the bus and then negotiate the train station etc etc. She was sorry she didn't just book the connecting flight. Luggage gets checked through to Florence. We're doing this again on Mar 2. Very easy. Good luck.

By train, Rome-Florence is much easier/quicker than Milan-Florence.

Rome-Florence takes only 95 mins (plus 30 mins from the airport).

Steve

There are no direct non-stop flights out of the US to either Florence or Pisa. Usually the routing will take you thru London or Paris. Plus the cost will be higher to fly into these smaller airports (versus flights into Rome or Milan). I've flown into both Rome & Milan airports; to get to Florence I concur with Steve. Definitely easier & quicker to do so out of Rome.

I would recommend flying to Rome and then Eurostar train to Florence. Quick and convenient train trip. Do not cut the time between your arrival in Rome and your train trip to Florence too fine as clearing customs and getting your luggage in Rome can take ages and the road trip from Rome airport to the centre of Rome can be a nightmare depending on traffic conditions. Better to stay one night in Rome and catch the early train to Florence next day.
