Trummelbach Falls in Switzerland - how to get there?

Hello Fodorites!

I am taking a trip to Switzerland next weekend and will be staying in Gimmelwald (near Wengen/Murren). I would like to go visit Trummelbach Falls - on the map, it looks quite close to Murren, but I'm not sure on the details of where exactly it's located or how to get there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!

Take the cable car from Gimmelwald down to Stechelberg. Then take the bus heading to Lauterbrunnen. Trummelbach is one of the stops along the way.

Edward is right on. The bus is timed to meet the descending car from Gimmelwald.
The falls on on the right as you head north toward Lauterbrunnen.

I have walked easily from Lauterbrunnen to the falls, and I have taken the bus.

The falls are lighted, and there is an elevator to take you up to one of the higher viewing areas. I suggest a jacket that you don't mind getting a little water on.

There is an admission charge. The restaurant located close to the entrance is decent enough. I never got a full meal there like a dinner, but what I had was tasty.

The falls are deeply recessed into the limestone that forms that side of the valley and they are not really visible from the road like Staubbach Falls.

Given that the falls carry off glacial melt water, and that temperatures now are much much lower than in the summer, I doubt that there will be as much water coming down the chute as there was in late June when the temperatures on the vally floor were soaring up to 90 F.

Even so, you should get a good display of the power of falling water.

If you want to continue on to Lauterbrunnen, you can easily do so.

Give us a description of your accommodations in Gimmelwald afterwards. I have walked through the area more than once and never saw anything that looked like a hotel of any size.

Great - thanks so much! It's helpful to have an idea of how to get to the falls and then on to Lauterbrunnen.

In Gimmelwald we'll be staying at a place called "Esther's Guesthouse," a small B&B-type establishment close to the cable car station. I will be sure to post a trip report when I return. Thanks again

While you are there, walk the trail to the Kilchbalm. It is a deadend glacial cirque right up against the sheer cliffs of the Gspaltenhorn. Waterfalls stream down the faces of the rock, a lovely mountain stream forms from all the melting snow high above, and I had the feeling that I was deep in the mountains. The trail out there is reasonably flat as mountain trails go, and you parallel the creek gorge all the way in.

I think the "Kilch" is the total opposite of the high ridges and the staggering views you can get from them. It is a scenic place deep in the inner recesses of the Alps.

You can easily do the Schilthorn ride from Gimmelwald. The first stop is Mürren where you change cars for the top. That leg of the trip is expensive, however, and regardless of which transit pass you may have, it is never free.
At best, you get the trip for 50% off.
