Truffles in Paris
 

Where is the best place (lowest prices and good selection) to purchase truffles, including white truffle oil, in Paris?

I was impressed by the selection in the food store at Galleri Lafayette and I walked around quite a bit gazing at all the stuff they had while my wife was shopping. But I'm not sure that it is the cheapest place in town to buy stuff :d I have posted a trip report with some pictures and links on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com/Paris_France.htm and maybe you can find some useful info there. Hope that you get some feedback from others when it comes to finding the best and cheapest selection of truffles.

On my last visit to Paris in October I went in search of truffles and saw a few teeny white truffles at Maison de la Truffe near Fauchon. I was told the season had not yet started.
If I were to try and find truffles next time, I would try the Raspail Organic Market, the Montrouge market, Marche Maubert and maybe rue D'Ageurre which is similar to rue Cler.
Don't be tempted to buy truffles preserved in brine - they are a complete waste of money and taste like sawdust.
Truffle oil can be bought at A L'Olivier at 23 Rue de Rivoli.

First of all, you need to decide whether you are looking for white or black truffles. White are Italian, black are French (generally speaking)

Fresh truffle season is December/January. Not sure how many get to Paris or what the prices are, but here in the Perigord where a lot of them come from, they can be 800 euros a kilo. Luckily you wouldnt be buying a kilo, but still not cheap.

I would check the food hall at Bon Marche, a wonderful place to spend some time, for truffle products - oil, etc. Probably also some white truffle oil, although I have to say I havent looked for it there. Or come to Sarlat for real truffles.

I think the season extends a little further than January--end of February, first of March was when we saw them in the markets in Avignon.
Truffle oil--probably Bon Marche in Paris.

Ummmm--you aren't going to be able to bring them into the country returning to the US. Unless they are canned.
