Troyes, a nice daytrip from Paris?
 

We will be in Paris for 1 week in late March. We are considering a daytrip to Troyes.

Is this an interesting town to visit and would you recommend it for a daytrip by train from Paris?

What are some highlights to visit in Troyes?

Auxerre is also a very nice daytrip.

I haven't done this but I want to... it is a short train ride to Troyes, which has an interesting medieval center... as does nearby smaller Provins (not sure you can get a train directly to Provins)..Request tourist brochures immediately and they will get to you in time.

p.s. we have not gone to Troyes yet, but we went to Provins in May. That was enjoyable but I now think Troyes will be even more interesting

I can't imagine during Troyes and Provins in one day.

Provins is the last stop on one of the RER/commuter lines. You could spend the day and a night in Troyes, get yourself over to Provins the next day and return to Paris... Troyes is a larger town than is Provins, so I don't think you can do it justice in less than a day.

I spent a couple of nights in Troyes a few years ago. Liked it so much I day-tripped there last November. Great little city.

Beautiful pictures of Ronchamp Michael. I'll have to make it some day.

I have the exact same picture of a Troyes manhole cover too. I always wonder if under the wood it says "Pont au Mousson" like many of the covers in France.

The interior of Ronchamp is also impressive, but no photography is allowed.

I doubt that it says "Pont a Mousson" because this cover, unlike most in France, includes the name of the city.

We were going to go to Troyes, had the whole day planned out, but for some reason went to Auxerre.

It's a very pleasant town.

I stopped there for lunch once & it was pleasant enough, but I wouldn't see the point in taking a day out of Paris to go there.

Thank you, Ira. However, when someone asks you if they ought to take a day from Paris to visit Troyes and you respond "yes," that it is a pleasant town and you would recommend a visit, one would think you would have first-hand knowledge.

The reason that writing was invented was that it is impossible for one person to have first-hand knowledge of everything.

You will note that others, who do have first-hand knowledge, have supported my statement.

There are also guide books, such as those I suggested to the OP, which can be referenced to allow the OP to decide.

Furthermore, one's particular experience might not be usual. Thus, it is not reasonable to assume that because one person visited one place one time that that person's opinion should carry more weight than a person who has researched the place and is relying upon the reports of many visitors.

That is why I gave the OP suggestions on how to find information on Troyes.

I hope that this satisfies your curiosity.

Just to add my two cents, I would agree that a forum like this is for personal impressions of a place. When I have HEARD second-hand that some place is nice and I want to share that, I always make it clear that that is what I'm doing.

Lots of places look fascinating in a guide book. I come to this site for other travelers' first-hand opinions.

Ira I have brought this up with you before. You imply, by your recommendation of Troyes as a side-trip from Paris, that you have been there yourself. If you have not been to a place, you ought to say so; you can write, "I have not been there but have read in .....guide that it is an interesting town." As for recommending that the OP "visit a library," the less said the better. Also, you need to broaden your use of adjectives, "pleasant" and "nice" are not always very useful descriptors.

I thought Ira's comment 'it was a pleasant town' was describing <i>Auxerre</i>, which he DID visit.

Personally, I wouldn't think of criticizing how someone else characterized a place or experience. I would form my opinion from the overall impression created by all the responses.

And it certainly never hurts to go look up in a book, google, find some online images, etc. to firm up your own interest in a place.
