Trouble renting a car in Siena.
 

Is it true that you have to rent a car for three days while in Siena? I tried to reserve a car online and I received a message informing me of a three day minimum. If I can just rent a car for a day I would be most appreciative if anyone knew what site I could do it on.

If I cannot rent a car for just a day, are the vineyards and Chianti accessible by train or bus?

Phone AutoEurope and ask. Their 800 number is on the website at autoeurope.com. It could be less expensive to rent for three days than for one. Most cost effective, on a per day basis, is renting for a week . Maybe you could tweak your itinerary?

Okay, got it. I just checked and I do have to rent a car for three days. No problem, but here is the new dilemna. Should I both pick up and drop off the car in Siena, then bus to Florence? Or should I just drive the car to Florence and drop it off there? Decision, decisions.

It's hard to say without knowing your complete itinerary, but with the info you've provided, why not pick up in Siena and drop off in Florence? You don't need the car while you're actually <i>in</i> either city, so if you decide to do this, pick up as you're leaving Siena and drop off as you arrive in Florence.

Have you tried simply calling Avis? They do have an office in Siena. I think it is only with the discounted brokers, like AutoEurope, that you will be required to rent for three days minimum.

Of course, you may find that a one day rental will cost as much as (or even miore than) the rate quoted by AutoEurope for a three day rental!]

This is one situation for which a Rail'n'Drive pass from RailEurope can be worth its price. It allows for single day rentals.

We were in Siena recently. We already had a car but I heard our hotel make arrangements for another guest to rent a car. I don't remember the type of car but the cost was 70E per day with unlimited mileage and I think the rental company delivered the car to the hotel. So, you might check with your hotel to see what help they can give you.
