If the city workers dress down too much, they might get mistaken for demonstrators.

Actually, the biggest disruption is likely to be Obama and his immense motorcade, whichever airport he uses (and I don't expect that to be announced).

Gordon_R Mar 29th, 2009 03:42 AM

>>>Actually, the biggest disruption is likely to be Obama and his immense motorcade, whichever airport he uses (and I don't expect that to be announced).

But it has been announced - it's in all the newspapers that he's arriving at Stansted, but probably transferring into London in a helicopter to avoid the traffic.

Sooner or later, people are going to recognize corli-posts and steer clear of them. C-W, corli's one of those people even Americans are embarrassed by, but don't ever call corli a "Yank" -- unless, of course, you want to see a Texan's knickers in a circulation-stopping twist. As for bettyk, well . . . amazing what she'll do to bring the "politically charged" lounge with her to other forums.

Good luck with the ruckus.

Cholmondley_Warner Mar 29th, 2009 06:02 AM

Don't worry about. Every country has it's wankers. Ours is called walkingaround.

Here's the full skinny:

Thanks for the Guardian link. Wednesday's carnival actually looks interesting....

Well, Obama is miles better than the last one, but entertaining him is like having to suffer a visit from Queen Elizabeth 1st.
Does he really need 200 bodyguards?
I'd have thought that about five with their eyes open would be sufficient.
Also, in grumpy old bloke mode, when did the daft custom start of dragging the spouses along?
They must be bored to tears.
I wonder if Professor Sauer, Angela Merkel's husband will be forced to attend.

MissPrism Mar 30th, 2009 02:45 AM

According to http://tinyurl.com/dmz73v
"One who will not be there is the chemistry professor husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel who, probably wisely, makes a habit of not attending such events"

Wasn't it Kennedy who started the wives thing?

Josser Mar 30th, 2009 03:08 AM

I have a theory about corli
Another prominent poster hasn't been seen for a while.
Perhaps corli has cut out and pasted a false beard and dark glasses.

I was at Prestwick last time Bush came for one of these jamborees. The security was ludicrous - for days before the entire perimeter had a polis every 50 yards, (forces from all over the UK) every blade of grass was interrogated, normal life ceased for miles around.
The day he arrived (in 2 wide bodied jets) the air was thick with attack helicopters ("nobody make any sudden movements"). He left in marine 1 (another chopper) in a cloud of helicopter gunships.
If you think the bill for policing the demos is big just try to find out how much we are paying to protect the head septic.
IMHO these gigs should be held in a military airport.

Cholmondley_Warner Mar 30th, 2009 04:16 AM

The septics are ridiculous on this. It is apparently impossible for their president (an apparently able bodied man) to walk farter than 50 yards (that's the rules).

The Queen is 83 and walks miles each day.

BTW - we don't pay for all those blokes in crappy suits and sunglasses - the ham shanks do.

>>It is apparently impossible for their president (an apparently able bodied man) to walk farter than 50 yards (that's the rules).<<

I thought that was Gerald Ford....

Cholmondley_Warner Mar 30th, 2009 04:45 AM

19 people - no problem. One yank - big problems. Says it all really.

FrankS Mar 30th, 2009 05:04 AM

I guess all the 'good' financial news last week was to make London a tad safer for our fearless leaders

MissPrism Mar 31st, 2009 01:43 AM

I see that Carla Bruni is not coming either, sensible woman.

Cholmondley_Warner Apr 1st, 2009 05:01 AM

So far a couple of scuffles with the usual hot heads, and some protestors (boom boom).

I'm on in an hour....By golly this is boring.

MissPrism Apr 1st, 2009 05:04 AM

May it stay boring! ;-)

Josser Apr 1st, 2009 05:12 AM

The driver would fail his test

That thing looks as though it could hold all his 500 coutiers

thursdaysd Apr 1st, 2009 09:52 AM

Pretty much of a non-event for me. I had a peaceful afternoon in the British Library and Russell Square. I did see some signs about roads being closed to traffic around the Strand. Then I came through Trafalgar Square around 5:30 - three TV vans, a small group of possible protesters. Lots of flags. BTW, anyone know what the orange and green Union Jack type flag near the London Eye signifies? I had a peaceful afternoon in the British Library and Russell Square.

Cholmondley_Warner Apr 2nd, 2009 06:18 AM

I didn't get further than tottenham Ct Rd. Load of bollocks the lot of it.

I heard on the news last night that Michelle Obama hugged the Queen. The mind boggles.

The queen hugged her first! And asked that she keep in touch!

As mentioned in my trip report, the much touted protests failed to do much to interrupt daily life for either residents or tourists like myself. Kudos the local authorities for their work to make it so and huzzas to the media for stirring the pot.
