Trondheim vs Oslo Norway
 

We're going on a Hurtigruten trip this fall. On the way north, we have a 4 hour stop in Trondheim. My DH has some difficulty walking so won't be able to rush around and see everything. On the trip south, we disembark in Trondheim.

Our current plan and hotel reservations follow:
. spend the dis-embarkment day sightseeing and stay overnight in Trondheim
. following day, take train to Oslo
. will have a few hours that day to see sights in Oslo plus the whole following day

Or should we:
. immediately board train in Trondheim when we disembark and spend 2 nights in Oslo
rather than splitting it between the 2 cities

Is there much to see in Trondheim? The original thought of staying there was to have a bit of a break between the ship and a 6+ hour train ride.

Your thoughts?

Take the Trondheim excursion from the ship heading north. The bus gives you a good view of the city, and a tour of Nidarosdom.
Minimal walking involved.
On the way south get the train straight away to Oslo. If you ask on the ship you can probably hitch a ride on the tour bus again to the station, or they can help with the transfer.
Both early morning starts, but I think that is best for you if walking is a problem.

The main place to see in Trondheim is the cathedral. I would do as poster above suggests, then spend more time in Oslo. Enjoy your Hurtigruten experience, it's wonderful.

I found the Decorative Arts museum more interesting.

Michael - that museum doesn't open until 10 am. The northbound ship docks at 8.30 and leaves at 12, so it wouldn't be an option unless Clousie decides to stay in Trondheim.

You can book the excursion on board btw, if you decide to do that option.

Oh and in Oslo do get the Oslo card, for "free" public transport and museum entry, plus discounts on some places to eat and in some shops.

My take on the Oslo card, from my trip report::

"We did purchase the three day Oslo card that included museums, and while it was definitely worthwhile in terms of convenience, I am not sure that it is necessary. The Fine Arts museum was free, as was the Decorative Arts Museum. The one day visiting the Norsk Folkemuseum museum, the Viking Museum, the Kon-Tiki museum and the Frammuseet required obtaining tickets (free with the card). If a three day transportation pass is available, I think that it is a better deal than the Oslo card."

Each to his own Michael. We bought, it used and enjoyed not only the convenience of it, but also the discounts it offered us.

We also ised the Oslo Card and it made our experience so much easier regatding transportation.

Think we have decided to not stay over in Trondheim, but instead spend three nights (two full days) in Oslo. Will look into the Oslo card.

Sorry I don't have the exact names in front of me, but of course we plan to see the park and also the hall where the Noble Prize is presented. Having seen the hall in Sweden, where the others are presented, I'd like to see this one. What other suggestions does anyone have? We do just like to wander through old sections of towns, too, so any place in particular to go?

When going to the Oslo city hall (where the Nobel Prize is presented), make sure you go upstairs (up the grand staircase) to see the various rooms.

To wander: the waterfront from the main harbor in front of city hall to the opera house.

Frogner Park, the National Gallery and the Opera House are a good part of a day. Walking on the Opera House roof was fun, even during a rainstorm.

The Fram Museum and the Viking ship museum done together work out great. The Fram is very interesting. I'm so glad we went. Seeing the Viking ships up close was another great memory.

We purchased the Oslo Card because it was a bargain for what we planned to do.
