Trips Outside Krakow

Hi,
We will be in Warsaw for 3 nights and then train to Krakow for 6 nights in early April. We would be very appreciative of any information about visiting some small towns around Krakow. We are definitely going to Auschwitz for the entire day, and are not interested in the Salt Mines. I don't think that we are interested in Zakopane either, although we are sure it is beautiful there.
We are more interested in just small towns where we could get a feel for what daily life is like outside the cities. We will either rent a car for the day or hire a guide.
In other countries we have had a car for the entire trip and we were able to stop at many small towns. We have often found these towns to be the highlights of the trip. This time, due to time constraints, we will not be driving.
Thank you so much for any info. you can give us.

Great Guidebook..POLAND, Roman Marcinek. It offers many travel options that few tourists know anything about. <[email protected]>
Oświêcim/Auschwitz-Birkenau may not take a day. Search out national parks.

About an hour north of Krk is called painted village Zalipie. It was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip to se Poland. The buildings exteriors are painted with bright colors in floral and bird designs. There is a small homestead of the original woman who began this custom, now a museum. Local women paint objects for purchase in Dom Malarek, the local town center, which can be visited. This was amazing folk art IMO and very photogenic. They host a spring competition sometime in spring.

If you want to see a communist era planned town go to Nova Huta, it makes an interesting contrast. It was built in the 50s I think around the huge steelworks.

Thank you all. Just yesterday I finalized our plans and they do indeed include Zalipie as well as Sandomeirz. Also we are definitely planning on going to Nova Huta.
Thanks again.
