Trips from Lund, Sweden
Hello everyone,
I'm going to Lund as an exchange student for six months and would like to see a few other cities/countries while I'm there, for long weekends and perhaps spring break, if it isn't too busy. Copenhagen and Stockholm are already on my list. I am considering Berlin and Helsinki, but I'd appreciate more suggestions. Thank you! -Ju |
You can take an overnight ferry/train from Sweden (south of Malmo not far from Lunda) to Berlin.
Oslo is an easy weekend trip as well. Gothenburg in Sweden is a real gem. There are overnight train connections between Copenhagen and Germany and Paris I believe and Amsterdam, via Germany For long weekends, etc take the train or cheap plain. Strongly investigate the 2-month Eurail Youth Flexipass (Select pass if five or fewer countries involved) - lots of great info on European trains and passes - www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.raileurope.com. |
Great! The Eurail passes look like a great deal especially since I'll be there for a few months. Thank you! :)

do not forget the overnight rule with a Eurail Flexipass - if you board an overnight train after 7pm (like the one that leaves Copenhagen nightly for Germany - you put the next day's date in as your unlimited travel day - thus you hop the overnight train from Copenhagen and once getting off that train in Germany the next morning you have an unlimited day of traveling - say going onto Switzerland, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, etc.
Of course from Lund you would have to use a day to get to the overnight train...unless you can find a cheap bus to Copenhagen, etc where it would not be worth it to use your pass day. |
for along weekend a great getaway is to take the train to Stockholm and then take one of the world's most prettiest cruises over to Helsinki, Finland - the boat goes overnight but if days are long you see a simply awesome coastline much of the way - sleep on the boat in either reclining seats or couchettes (Pullmans) or just stay up all night in the disco!
Eurailpassas are 100% valid for the boats and I think may even give you a free berth in a couchette-type compartment - used to but not sure now. Good for a 4-5 day break. From Helsinki it is just a short boat ride over to Tallinn, Estonia - a nice day trip from Helsinki. |
