Trip up the Rhine - Castles to Stay?

Hi,

I am going to Germany for the World Cup (yippee!). I would also like to go on a trip down the Rhine perhaps from Cologne, but in any case from Koblenz to Mainz. Does anyone have recommendations for accommodation? I found a castle - http://hotel-schoenburg.com/ but of course it is expensive. Perhaps it is worth it?

I am a little confused regarding how the boats/ cruises work because I just want to go one way from Cologne towards Mainz and then go on to Stuttgart. Perhaps I have to combine train travel with boat travel?

Thankyou in advance for any help you can give.

Look at this website:
http://www.k-d.com/englisch/index.html

It lists the timetable for the main ship line on the Rhine - these basically work like a taxi, you can go as far as you want, get off when you want.

There is a castle hotel at Kaub (Hotel Gutenfels). You can find their website from the following:

A definitive..."yes"...the Castle Hotel schoenburg is worth it! It's fantastic.
The castle, itself, is gorgeous...the views are breathtaking...the rooms are beautiful...and the staff is excellent.

You won't regret a stay there!

Thankyou!

I have decided to book it. Sounds fantastic but yes, expensive at 175 euros. We don't have castles to stay at in Australia.

There's also the hostel at the castle above Bacharach. I think it's something like 26 euros for room and board.

I did stay at the Schoenburg Castle and it was fantastic! It was really worth the money, and staying at budget places beforehand to afford it. It was a real highlight of our trip. Just wonderful!

We too stayed there several years ago. It coincided with my sons birthday so it was a special present for him. It is lovely. I was thrilled because it accomodated a family of four the boys had little compartments to sleep in which they loved. We had a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. I had some type of special medieval meal that was to die for and I know it contained things that I didn't want to know about (like blood pudding) but was so good. The experience is worth the cost.

lorikeet - Do you happen to know if the Schoenburg Castle is within walking distance of the Oberwesel train station?

Anyone know anything about the Colmberg castle in Germany? Price is alot but one night we are worth it. My niece wants to stay in one so dreams will come true next week!

Sorry for the late response - the castle is very much uphill, very steep - we caught a taxi which the lady at the shop rang for us. It came quickly and the service was very friendly. It would be a very hard task to walk it.

Burg Colmberg near Rothenburg. is very nice. Some rooms get sort of expensive (up to 179 euro a night for a double), but doubles start at 75 euro and singles at around 40 euro. Includes breakfast, service, and taxes--and parking if you have a car. Nice restaurant, too. Nice views of the landscape below if you get a room on an outer wall.
