Trip to Switzerland in 2017

I really missed my traveling days, and hopefully this report will at least bring back some of the memories for others that are stuck at home like me.Switerland has always been on our list for exploring after our short visit to Lucerne in 2012. It is like a magnet keep drawing us back to the beautiful Alps for more.

Finally, we made the trip, covering Bernese Oberland, Zermatt to Matterhorn, and with a gorgeous side trip to Charmonix and the Aiguille du Midi, then arriving Geneva as a base for our 6 day-trip to Spain later.

We wanted the flexibility to hop on the trains or buses any time and as many times as we wanted, so we bought the 120 CHF Swiss half fare card with a reduced 6-Day 235 CHF Bernese Oberland regional pass. These gave us all the possibilities to do what were the best as the days went on. We had a 5-night stay at the Cambrian Design Hotel, Adelboden, using our SPG reward points. We left our plan open, so that we could just chose the area to visit depending on the weather, and our combination of a half fare card and the regional pass were definitely being fully utilized. We took a lot of cable cars, trains, cog rails, buses, and covered a lot places, even with a free Toboggan run in Oeschinen. Followings were all the places we covered:
Day 1 Arrived early morning in Zurich, bought our half fare card and regional pass, and our half-price tickets to Lucerne. After that the journey was all covered under the regional pass. As it was a good day, we put our luggage in locker storage at Interlaken Ost before heading up to Schilthorn. We took the train to Lauterbrunnen, follow with the cable car to Grutschalp, then the rail to Murren. The short walk from the rail station to Murren was very scenic with mountains all around. While we were about to purchase the tickets to Schilthorn, we were told it was not worth going up as the weather was not superb up there. We decided not to go up, and took the cable car to Stechelberg instead. We took a bus to Trummelbach Falls, but ended up not going in as it was dry in the fall time. We took the bus back to Lauterbrunnen and had dinner by the falls there. After dinner, we took trains and followed by the bus to Adelboden.

Day 2 It was a good day in Zermatt region on the next day. We woke up early as we had jet lag. We were excited as it was a good day for a trip to see the Matterhorn. We took a train to Brig, and then pay the half price expensive ticket to Zermatt as our regional pass did not cover this zone. The cog rail to Gornergrat was pricey too. Since it was a good day, it was definitely worth the money to go up there. Stunning, and beautiful! From the top, we then hiked down to Riffelberg, it was absolutely gorgeous all around. We would say it was a trip well worth the money spent for a gorgeous day like this.

Day 3 We went to Grindelwald, cable car to First, and did the Cliff Walk. We later took the long cable ride from Grund to Mannlichen. Instead of hiking, we were cruising in the air, and the scenery was just so beautiful all around. We took another steep cable car ride to Wengen later.

Day 4 We decided to try our luck for Jungfrau. It was a partly sunny day. The valley was dreamy and beautiful. As the train climbed up to Kleine Scheidegg, the heavy fog rolled in, and Jungfraujoch was no way in sight. We took the next train down to Grindelwald, even with no Jungfraujoch, the journey was absolutely beautiful. That was not the end yet, we went to Schynige Platte, and it just blew our mind away. We did a hike, and it was so gorgeous, and marvelous, from the top we saw Jungfrau from a far distance. On the way back to Adelboden, we also stopped by Harder Kulm for a short spun, we had made the quota of the day using our regional pass for all the beautiful train rides, cog rails, and cable car rides.

Day 5 We explored the area of Kandersteg. Going up to the Lake Oeschinen, and went on one free ride of the toboggan run included in the regional pass, and also took another cable car ride to the Sunnibuel. We also saw the the LötschbergCar Train when we on the way to Kandersteg. It was cool to see a long stretch of cars with passengers and all aboard the train. We had a leisure day to walk around the town of Adelboden. There are a lot of hiking trails and fun things to do at Adelboden, but not covered by our regional pass. The mountain-view from the area is just as beautiful, and in winter this is a big skiing town. The bus ride from Frutigen to Adelboden is very interesting. We agreed that the bus drivers are very skillful to maneuver in such tight narrow and curvy uphill road, in addition with towing a storage car box at its rear. I never get tired of the scenery for the five days that we had to travel back and forth. The punctuality of all the trains and bus are superb in Switzerland; which makes all the journey easy, smooth, and come with all the good scenery while relaxing on the rides.

Day 6 We actually left a day opened for any plan change as we moved on with our trips. As the weather forecast predicted a good day in Mont Blanc, we quickly jump into booking a night at Charmonix. We booked our half priced tickets from Brig to Martigny, and the Mont Blanc express from Martigny to Charmonix, with a bus change at Vallorcine to Charmonix. We were lucky that everything worked out according to plan, and we arrived at noon with a good amount of time to catch the Aiguille du Midi cable car. It was so beautiful up there that it was beyond my words could describe. Even my pictures could not do justice to the scenery.

So long, folks! Hope you have fun going through the pictures.

Fantastic scenery. Today is stiflingly hot here and I felt slightly refreshed looking at all the photos of snow.

It sounds like you really enjoyed yourselves.

I'm impressed with the amount of use you got from your transportation passes.
