You can take the Greenline bus tour from Rome to Pompeii. I took it last year since it was much more convenient and less stressful for me. They usually have brochures in hotel lobbies and can have them pick you up from your hotel. Their website is www.greenlinetours.com

This post interest me as we are leaving for Rome tomorrow and plan on going to Pompeii on Monday. Two years ago we took an organized tour to Pompeii which I enjoyed but was disappointed with only having 2 hours at Pompeii.
So, I've been researching various tours and none of them allow more than 2 hours on site.
Monday, we plan on taking an early train down. This way we can spend as much time as we like and then return to Rome late in the evening.
I'll post how it went when I return.

jpm: I don't know if this was the exception or the rule and it's just based on one experience. Perhaps I'm wrong and will be corrected but keep this in mind.
There is going to be a train strike from Sat 9pm to Sun 9pm.
Last March I was in Naples heading to Rome on a Monday morning after one of these Sat/Sun 24hr strikes.
I booked a seat on a Eurostar in smoking 1st class which is actually the least requested car. This car was ~80-90% full, so I have to assume that probably the 2nd class Smoking/NonSmoking cars were full along with the NS 1st class car.
Again assuming but if that was the case on a Eurostar after a strike, I'd imagine that an InterCity train would be jam-packed with standees.
janier: Go your own, it's well worth it. A 2hr bus tour group only will see a small section of the site. Did it once and was very disappointed but have been back on my own 3 times. Go to www.twenj.com click-on "Rome" and then "Excursions" on the sidebar. 1 minor mistake in the walking directions where it says "Garibaldi" train station that should read "Centrale". Same station just on different levels and actually from either one just follow the signs to the Circumvesuviana. Regards, Walter

As a dat trip from Rome - Take high speed train from Rome-Naples (Piazza Garabaldi), once in Naples you will have to purchase a ticket for the circumvesuviana (metropolitan) line. To get to the track you will have to go 'underneath' the train station and there will be signs directing you to the train you need. From here it is only about 1/2 hour to Pompeii - make sure you get off at the stop 'Scavi Pompeii' as there is another stop that is just 'Pompeii'. A return ticket on the Cirumvesuviana line was only about 5USD.
