Trip to Northern Italy
A group of 6 will be going to Switzerland in late May and plan to take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz. From there, we hope to use the Swiss railroad to go to Tirano [which is the first rail station in Italy coming from St. Moritz] and work our way over to Venice.
Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to pick-up a rental car in or near Tirano?
Any suggestions as where to go and stay between Tirano and Venice?

Bringing your message back up "to the top" since you are brand new here (how did I know that? Click on your own name - - a tip for finding any post you have ever made - - that Fodors fails to divulge to all new registrants, when they send you that confirmatory e-mail).

I see that my answer here was not as good as that provided by Steve...
...anyhow, bringing your message back up "to the top" since you are fairly new here
... and you may not know about "click on your own name", if you never saw these replies.

I would train from Tirano to Bolzano to get your car. I would then drive into the Dolomites and stay in either Castelrotto or Ortisei[Val Gardena] for 2 nites, and then to venice via Cortina. Bring your camera.

<<the best way to pick-up a rental car in or near Tirano? >>
(my emphasis added)
bob, bob, bob... you need to look at a train timetable!
Bolzano is 7-8 hours, and two train changes away!
Sondrio is 26 minutes away! (with a one-minute stop, nine minutes into the ride at Tresenda-Aprica-Teglio)

Okay, so the plot thickens on this. Bob's point seems to b valid for either AutoEurope or "straight Avis" (didn't try Hertz) - - using arbitrary dates of May 20-27, I had poor luck finding a van.
Sondrio - - no cars available at all
Lecco - - compact only
Milan (rail station) - - largest is full size (no vans).
It may be necessary to go to the phone(s) with Autoeurope, Avis or Hertz - - and having them start checking other Milan locations.
