I will be in Manchester for a few days in October. I would like some suggestions as to what to do while I am there.
I'vew been thinking of spending a day there myself. There is a brand new museum called the Imperial War Museum North (an offshoot of London's popular Imperial War Museum). It looks very interesting - anybody checked it out yet?

There is also a Museum of Science & Industry that covers various areas such as transportation and computing, and traces the history of industry in Manchester. And the art museum has some Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

I have a free afternoon in Manchester on Tuesday(30th) and I'm intending to visit either the Imperial war museum North or Urbis. I'll report back

Sorry about this but having said I'd report back, my free afternoon in Manchester didn't come about!I was facing a free five hours and had decided to go to Urbis. However my 5 hours turned into 61/2, and then when I got to the Metro station I couldn't park.It was also chucking it down by then so I decided to call it a day and went home.
If anyone else can tell us what these new attractions are like ,I'll be going some day.......

You won't beleive this, but one of the biggest attractions here is the Mall "The Trafford Center". It may be just like our big malls in the USA, but it is pretty uncommon here in the UK. However, if you find yourself here on a rainy day (Which is often the case), you can shop in the dry weather. You can experience some typical British stores like Selfridges, Next and Marks and Spensers. Also, just the people watching alone is worth a visit.

http://www.manchester2002-uk.com is a terrific website.
The whole area of castlefield including the Museum of Science and Industry is a must if you have any interest in history. <p>
In addition to the places mentioned the Lowry Centre in Salford is great and very near the Inperial War Museum. Do not worry about it being a different city. Manchester and Salford 'centres' are almost adjacent!

If you like Indian food, you must visit the "Curry Mile" in Rusholme.

Manchester is my home town and recently put on a spectacular Commonwealth Games at the new Sportcity stadium - will be Manchester City Football Club's new home ground from Sept. Catch a game! I visited Urbis- the new museum of the city which is right by the Cathedral in an area that has been rebuilt after the IRA bomb which wreaked havoc in Manchester city centre some 5 years ago. Very interesting concept and fascinating building design. The Royal Exchange Theatre in the Victorian cotton exchange is v. interesting. I'd also recommend the newly refurbished City Art Gallery. The Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum North also great to visit. Enjoy yourself up t' North!
