Trip to Italy: Tuscany and Rome and where to go for 3 days in between?

I'm wondering where you would suggest my husband and I (age52) venture off to in between our 1 week stay in Tuscany and 4 days in Rome. Our trip starts out a week in Tuscany with 6 other couples, with day trips to Florence, Siena, Cinque Terre and they all want to make the long trek for a day in Venice. Then my husband and I will be on our own for 3 nights before heading to Rome for 4 nights. Any thoughts? We love good wine, exploring, walking, biking, churches, towns...we are up for anything.

Suggestions would be much appreciated! We're celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary!

Orvieto, and if you have a car, a side trip to Todi for the day. On your way back to Rome pass by the Bomarzo garden monsters and the Villa Lante garden.

Rather than doing the day trip to Venice, do something else that day, and spend the three days in Venice.

Congrats on your anniversary!

What part of Tuscany will you be staying in?

My first thought was Orvieto. But I do love the idea of spending the 3 days in Venice! A quick day trip does not do it justice. Is Venice a possibility?

What time of year? If you are traveling in a shoulder season, I'd suggest making two or three possible plans, and then decide after you've enjoyed your time with friends in Tuscany. We always try to leave some serendipity time in our trips, and they turn out to give us some of our favorite experiences. You might enjoy Verona and Lake Garda, or Assisi and Spoleto. Or maybe you'll have visited someplace on a daytrip that you really want to check out further. You'll have that opportunity if you haven't set every day of your itinerary in stone.

You could take the train to the Amalfi Coast if the Venice option doesn't pan out. Ravello is a beautiful town to stay in. Venice is one of our favorite places. You can also take the train to Lake Como and spend 3 days wandering around the lake by ferry. We prefer the Florence hotel in Bellagio. If you're more adventureous take the overnight ferry from Naples to Sicily, rent a car and drive to The Valley of the Temples and then on to Taormina. It's very possible to do in 3 days. Stay both nights in Taormina. Then take the morning ferry back from Messina to Naples and the train on to Rome. The traveling is part of the adventure. TIP: pack a picnic for the overnight ferry.
