Trip to Garmisch

I am getting ready to go to Garmisch for 10 days; any suggestions on nice places to visit, surrounding area activities and travel advice?

There a number of charming moutnain villages to visit, as well as the Zugspitze peak--you can take a cable car up.

Garmish is in the heart of Ludwig castle country with several castles close by. You may also want to visit Oberammergau, the home of the passion play and wood carving, and Mittenwald, the violin maker's village. If you are traveling by car you can side trip to Salzburg and Bertschesgaden. Near B-gaden is a beautiful lake, Konigsee, where you can take a boat ride to a charming chapel. Enjoy your trip.

Spending 10 days in that area sounds like great fun. I suggest you buy and read at least 2 good guide books before going---the Michelin green book is a good start.

You can also do an easy day trip to Innsbruck. Be sure to order trout for lunch or dinner - they pull them out of the river right behind the town and they are fabulous - the best I've ever had.

Are you going in Summer or Winter? I really enjoyed the area in the summertime. I'd recommend a trip to the top of Zugspitze (where you'll find Germany's highest biergarten and incredible views on a nice day). Not far away by car is the Bertesgarten and the "Eagle's Nest" - A mountaintop retreat built as a gift from the Nazi party to Hitler. Today it's a restaurant/tourist area with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
