Driving out of Paris, stop on the way in Melun and visit the Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte.

I agree Dijon is bigger than Beaune, but it is very easy to walk around. No big avenues in the historic centre.
I like to quote orval (who is no longer on fodors I'm afraid) who said here :
<Of all the places in all the world, and all the places in France, I would pick Dijon, or the suburbs of Dijon to live.
I first visited there during the day, and was intrigued by the compactness of the place, which is the opposite of what I have just read in the thread above. The town center is medieval and lovely, with passerelles, or walking streets filled with shops.
We stayed the second time for several days, and when we went down to the center of the town, we were enthralled by the beauty of the medieval streets that were lit up magnificently. It was a place that I had looked for for many years of travelling in France. The change from day to night was amazing. There were couples arm in arm, strolling at midnight and beyond, with nary a care re: crime or crowds. There were quaint little boîtes and clubs as well as restos and bistros. We fell in love with Dijon. To each his own.> :-)

And you can go to Beaune for a day trip (20min by train).

Dick (nukesafe)you know that you're more than welcomed ;;)

Underhill-I got them! I look forward to reading them at my leisure.

Having looked at them just a bit, my compliments on your lovely writing style. (I'm an English teacher, after all.)

Corinne: Thanks for your input regarding Dijon. I will seriously consider staying there. It sounds like you have accommodations there--is it short term (a few days?) or long-term? What is your e-mail address? Kathe

jody Jan 26th, 2006 05:01 PM

Underhill..I'd also like a copy of your Burgundy notes..

[email protected]

Thanks!

Underhill Jan 26th, 2006 08:50 PM

Guy18--what a compliment! I had a great high-school English teacher who was also a Latinist, and her instruction is firmly engraved on my brain.

cocofromdijon Jan 27th, 2006 12:10 AM

Kathe, I'm glad you are considering Dijon as a base. You won't be disappointed!:-)
If you read carefully nukesafe's comment you'll be able to have a look at my website, where you can get all the info you need and write me through it if you are still interested.
And yes, you can stay as short as 2 days if you wish, any days of the week if available.
à bientôt
corinne

Jody,

Did you get the Burgundy articles? I've lost track of who got what.

cparris Jan 28th, 2006 12:40 PM

I hate to ask as well, but I would love the articles also, Underhill. [email protected] Thanks

My husband and I rented a farm house outside of Beaune for 6 weeks. I would suggest that you take the TGV from Paris to Dijon and rent a car at the train station there. Then drive to Beaune after a walk around Dijon.(You MUST go to the Mallie mustard store in Dijon) As far as where to stay in Beaune, it would depend on what you want to spend. Beaune is the heart of Burgundy and fairly centrally located to most regions. Also, if you can go to Alsace....do! It is such an interesting part of France! I will say that you loose some time driving to and from. If you go to www.butterfeildandrobinson.com or www.backroads.com and check out what they suggest for places to stay in Burgundy. They are pretty reliable for great ideas for places to stay. Good luck! Libby

Hi Libby, can you check this link? It didn't work :-( www.butterfeildandrobinson.com

Underhill I thought you had given a direct link to your articles (a long time ago) I tried to find them through the long list, but only found others like "so you want to visit France" that one can read without being registered. In which section do we have to look? :-)

Coco,

When BP moved to the latest new site some of the links seem to have vanished. That's why I've asked people to e-mail me so that I can send the articles in Word.

Hi,

I'd agree with those who suggest Beaune as a base for Burgundy. Six of us stayed at Le Cep in 2002 and found the hotel and the town of Beaune utterly charming. Beaune is a favorite among all the cities we have visited in France. Hotel Le Cep is just inside the city walls, so makes for a perfect location. Beaune had a Saturday morning market that was delightful. I have a few restaurant recommendations:

****Ma Cuisine (Jean-Pierre and Fabienne ESCOFFIER) -
Passage Sainte-Hélène
21200 Beaune
Phone (011 33) 3 80 22 30 22
Fax (011 33) 3 80 24 99 79
E-Mail: [email protected]
Casual atmosphere, fantastic food and great value for money (I think we paid roughly Euro 25 including wine -- wine prices are EXTREMELY reasonable) -- reservations a must. Dpo a google search and you'll find numerous rave reviews

La Ciboulette
69 rue Lorraine
Beaune
Phone: +33 (0)3 8024.7072
Fax : 33 (0)3.80.22.79.71
Excellent value, simple burgundian meals, bistro surroundings

We also did a splurge meal at Lameloise in Changny (20 minutes from Beaune (3* Michelin at the time -- I think it may have been downgraded to two recently). If you can afford, do a splurge meal somewhere -- they certainly are an experience!

Happy travels.

John H.

Julie, this link goes to your listings not to your thread. You have to click on the title when the thread is open and you'll get the link. :-)

Long trip report: Burgundy, Brittany, Lake Geneva with hotels and lots of food

That's the thread for my trip report that contains lots of info on touring in Burgundy. Thanks Coco. Hope this works. Somehow I think I'm still not getting it right.
