Excellent report. Since you write that you had already seen Strasbourg, the only <i>unmissable</i> site that I found missing from your report is <b>Le Struthof</b>, the only Nazi concentration camp that was located on French soil, not too far from Mont Sainte Odile. Obviously, the visit is a very stressful experience (particularly when you see the photos in the small museum building next to the camp) and should probably be avoided by the fainthearted.

We have visited enough WW2 and holocaust sites in our lives, and rarely visit them anymore.

Thanks for your great trip report!

It brought back so many lovely memories for me. We visited Alsace last year in September and agree it was the perfect time to visit.

We stayed in Riquewhir in a studio apartment in the ramparts and loved using it for a base. We visited many of the towns you mentioned and then some others. I found Alsace so beautiful from the cute and colourful towns to the amazing countryside, the delicious food and wine. We would love to return.

We rounded our stay with a few days in Strasbourg and we enjoyed that city as well. I had every good intention of writing another trip report but time got away from me.

So I thank you again for the memories and lovely photos. I think Alsace is an often overlooked part of France by English speaking tourists. But maybe it is nice to keep it that way.

Loved your report! Was there six years' ago and now want to return. I remember being so fascinated by the storks and their huge nests.

Terrific Report! I was in Strasbourg for about a week last December, but after reading your report a September trip to the smaller towns & villages of Alsace is definitely on my radar. Thanks! :-)

Alsace is an absolutely beautiful place to visit, even if you don't like wine.

Lovely report Steve. It brought back memories of our week long stay in Alsace in April 2006. It was Easter and all the villages were decorated with Easter themes. One memory I have is of a picnic lunch of Tourte d'Alsace and kugelhopf at the war cemetery at Sigolsheim. It overlooks fields of grapevines. Also a wonderful meal of charcroute in an auberge off the tourist trail. The staff were amazed to hear we were Australian. Also remember DH taking ages to get the perfect photo of a stork's nest. Happy times.

I have never been to that part of France. But when I hear “Alsace-Lorraine,” it reminds me of story we read in French in high school by Alphonse Daudet about the area – so sad set around the time of the Franco-Prussian War I believe.

Historically, this area has been an expensive, bloody piece of real estate which now looks so serene.
