Trip to Alsace
 

We are planning a trip to Alsace and hope to stay two nights in either Obernai (Hotel la Cour d'Alsace) or in Ottrott (Hotel l'Ami Fritz) and then spend two nights in Kienzheim (either Hotel Abbaye de Alspach or Hotel Schwendi) Is anyone familiar with these hotels or have any additional recommendations. Looking for a charming small hotel perhaps 10 to 20 rooms)

Also, do you have any restaurant recommendations near these towns. We are looking for good simple food (not gourmet dining) perhaps even a winstub in a pretty setting. We will have a car.

We've stayed several times (most recently for a month) in Kientzheim and know the village very well... it's wonderful... great location and not too touristed. The Schwendi is a family-owned hotel, a big bigger than your target, with a wonderful restaurant. You can have a gourmet meal or something more simple.. the food is great.

There's just one other restaurant in Kientzheim, across the street. In nearby Kaysersberg (you can drive or walk through the vineyards, less than a mile), we like the casual restaurant the Bratshall Manala.

We've also stayed at the L'Ami Fritz in Ottrott and eaten there several times. This is a more elegant restaurant, beautiful hotel in a small village strung out along a hill. The chef is very friendly... it's a special place.

Thank you very much for your input. We were hoping to have dinner at L'Ami Fritz in any event, just not sure if it was a good location to stay for two nights.

Also, your info regarding Kientzheim was very helpful. Sounds like it will be a lovely place to stay. We will try the Schwendi one night and good to know that we can easily get to Kaysersberg for more restaurant choices.

Luvsun, if you're interested in Kientzheim, we can also recommend these B&B rooms in the village. http://www.gites-kientzheim.com/en/ The family that owns this property is fantastic, and you'd have a very authentic experience.

Two of their units are apartments with kitchens and two are B&B rooms where breakfast is included.

We've stayed several weeks in one of their apartments and highly recommend!

Thank you for the additional information. The accommodations looked lovely--right out of a fairytale! I will keep them in mind; if not this trip, for a future trip when we are able stay for a longer period of time.

Are you familiar with the restaurant Cote Vigne in Kientzheim or A l'Agneau in Katzenthal? Thinking having dinner there.

I have a soft spot for Obernai, which has quite a few good restaurants. Unfortunately, the restaurant where my family (grandparents, parents, etc.) went for at least 50 years no longer exists, so I have no specific recommendations.

I was staying in Strasbourg last December and took the commuter train to Obernai for the afternoon to see their Christmas market. Very convenient, but I suppose that Ottrott is just as convenient.

I've eaten at the Cote Vigne in Kientzheim. It's good, but I prefer the Schwendi (right across the street).

I don't know the restaurant in Katzenthal, though I know the village.

You'll enjoy the L'Ami Fritz. The chef speaks English well and often circulates to talk with guests.

While you're in Ottrott, I'd encourage you to drive up to Mont St. Odile... a special place with incredible views.
