basingstoke, thanks for posting your photo link here as well. I do a lot less general surfing with the new format and so could easily miss good stuff (like your photos!).
I'm looking forward to the next set.

travfirst - Enjoy Bologna - explore the backstreets and the University area. If you get to "my" restaurant, don't miss the wine poached pear for dessert. It will be perfect after the green lasagna. The prosecco wine is available by the glass. If you are yet to experience this variety of white wine, you would be in for a treat. Please let us know how you like the place after you return.
Leely, I continue to edit Venice and Rome photos. There are lots of them.

Hello basingstoke,
We just got back from our trip. Happy to report that we had lunch at “your” restaurant. I ordered Lasange Verdi which was very good, but Gnocchi verdi porcini e speck DH ordered were most excellent – definitely best dish on our trip. We also had Antipasto della casa that I did not care for (fried zucchini, a slice of salami, deep fried tiny meatballs and sliced artichoke). We were lucky to get to the restaurant without reservation as many after us could not get a table and had to wait for a long time.

I am happy you enjoyed the restaurant - that gnocchi is really special! Sorry about the antipasto - we ordered the vegetarian antipasto which we liked. Hoping you favor us with a trip report. There are not too many that include Bologna.

Hello Basingstoke,
I suspect I'm looking at a different Hotel San Francisco in Trastevere, as the rate are 10 fold of the rate you quoted ( 70 euro's off season). I checked October and January 2009 for their rates, hoping to have found a bargain of a hotel. What I found was a rather elegant hotel with prices to match. Do you know if there are 2 such hotels in this area? Thanks.

My bad- correct spelling is Hotel San Francesco

Don't forget that if you do book there, ask for an even numbered room. I like the ones ending in six.

BTW, the hotel is showing a 159 Euro rate for October. The January rate shown does not make much sense since it is much higher than the October rate and we paid 70 Euro this past January booking directly with the hotel.

Brazilnut - October should be a perfect time to go. I'm glad you found the report useful. If you go back into the report you will find a link to photos of both cities. In Verona be sure to go to the Roman Theater if just for the views. Stay in a hotel within the walls, you will be glad that you did.

I agree with you that Bologna deserves more time. It was my first stop on my trip and I couldn't have been happier with the atmosphere and comfort, although we did have to dodge the Roma women here and there. We arrived on a Thursday and that Friday night the city was airing a silent movie in the main square. We sat and joined the crowd as an orchestra played along with the movie. Also, we visited the museum, just off the square, that had wonderful Egyptian artifacts et al. We ate at a local restaurant across the RR tracks in a nice neighborhood where our hotel was located with a nice cafe and outdoor market. It was a twenty minute walk, but not so bad to manage.

I don't know how I missed this when you originally posted. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I've read the section on Bologna and it's been very helpful for my trip planning. I'm planning on basing myself in Bologna for 8 nights!

LCI - if you see this, you may want to look at my Bologna photos. There is one of the exterior of the Hotel Paradise among them. I am posting this here because I did not want to further hijack Maitai's thread.

Thanks...last night I found the photo link in one of the posts above and checked them out...fantastic!
One thing that really draws me to the Hotel Paradise is when you said it was about a 10 minute walk to the train station and a 10 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore. This is a location I really want to be in. I'm planning to do several day trips by train and I'm looking for a hotel within easy walking distance to the train station, but also close to the main square...seems Paradise would fit my location needs.

Yes, we really liked the location. When I say 10 minutes to the train station that is an estimate since it actually took us 15, but we were dragging luggage.
The best part about the Paradise is the terrific staff. They really care about their guests and go out of their way to be helpful. They get the "little things" right. Expect comfort but don't expect luxury. We would return there.
