Trip Report - Salzburg Christmas Markets

Christmas Markets in Europe are always a fun experience. Here is a trip journal I just put together for a young lady who loves the Christmas Markets of Germany and Austria and spent last Christmas enjoying the best of Salzburg... Ben

Enjoyed your trip report so much. I was in Salzburg for Christmas as well and your pictures made me smile! On Christmas day I went to the Dom for a spectacular service with full orchestra and choir. That afternoon attended a violin concert at the Mirabel Palace and dinner at the Sacher Hotel. A truly lovely day.

Nice report. I love Salzburg, but as a warm weather person I go in summer. The report has tempted me to try it at Christmas. Thanks

Thanks so much for posting your trip report! I loved it so much, that I decided to book tickets for a simular trip this year! We've been thinking about it for awhile and your report gave us the extra push! We'll fly to Munich Dec. 21 then take the train to Salzburg, spending Christmas there. Around Dec. 27th we'll move onto Vienna and spend New Years Eve/Day there, then travel back to Munich.

Is there a less expensive ticket for the Vienna to Munich train trip than the regular price of 77€ each?

Flying through Munich saved hundreds of dollars vs. flying into Vienna.

Thank you for your wonderful report. I had one question, though. Did the hotel in Salzburg have a computer or did you bring your own laptop. Did they have a wireless connection? Thanks and will definitely be consulting your report frequently while planning my trip in 2008. -- Kathy

Enjoying this trip report quite a bit, just wanted to pipe in and say that the dessert you raved about (the dumpling with plums and vanilla sauce) is called "Germknodel" with an umlaut over the O, I believe, pronounced "gairm kuh noodle"?

It was a favorite of mine too, I had it at a ski resort in Austria when I was in high school

Heading to Salzburg this december for Christmas and our wedding anniversary as well

thanks for the report

We'd been thinking about spending a Christmas in Austria one day. The night I read this blog to DH, he had me call and get our flights! We've reserved a room at Haus Wartenberg, too! Thanks for being the impetus!

We are meeting with at least one other Fodorite family Christmas afternoon. Anyone else interested? Location TBA, suggestions welcome.

We may be able to join you on Christmas Day. We're all booked up for Christmas Eve.

Café Bazar near Mirabell Gardens and Palace might be a place to think about. I've e-mailed them to see if they're open on Christmas. Have you visited it before?

I have emailed a place in an historic building in the center of the city called Tomaselli Cafe to see if they are open on Christmas Day. Will let you know their response.
