Oh my! Was walking the dog and realized...Zurich is not the capital! But you get my point. Big city was what I meant.

Glad it's helpful, Viaggio and enzian. San Salvatore was GREAT. I'd add a day to do the walk to Gandria and to the top of Mount Bre as well.

Yes, Faina, I'm already wanting to see it again, this time in the summer. Especially Soglio. (Sigh)

Love your reference to your the crumbling haunted palazzo! It does look a little spooky, ha.

How many guest rooms do they have?

Two guest rooms. But we were the only guests. What I forgot to mention (and what makes it all the more spooky) is that the lady of the house never appeared...just a disembodied voice speaking Italian in some far off, off-limits room!!!

I take it you would not recommend this place? How did you find it?

Hello Guy18, I remember when you were planning your trip. Charming trip report and how I enjoyed reading about the hike you and P took from Mount San Salvatore.

Ah no boat ride, the workers were on strike for the day. P almost missed his train as the bus driver overslept. Yes indeed, it does sound like Italy LOL.

The haunted pallazzosalis, I was thinking the same as SeaUrchin, the Bates Motel!! I wouldn't be surprised if the signora is not pleased that due to financial circumstances they have to rent out rooms to the tourist. Loss of face with the surrounding neighbors etc. Hopefully something like that and it is not the case the signor also thinks he is the signora, LOL.

Thank you for sharing your trip Guy, it is always so interesting to read a report that is a bit off the beaten track.

Hi Guy! Great trip report. I'm glad things went well and that you were able to take your hike.

Interesting about Zürich! I only live about 40 min. away by train but I rarely go there. Too much of a country girl. I always enjoy reading about Zürich though and hearing about the places to go and restaurants to visit.

Yes, Switzerland is expensive! We don't going out dining with the kids much or if we do, it's usually at a Migros or Coop restaurant. Then the kids are allowed to choose what they want from their buffet. I believe there's a Globus in Zürich that also offers buffet style restaurants. I try to avoid McDonald's when I can cuz it's expensive too and the food isn't that filling.

Thanks again for taking the time to tell us about your adventures.

P.S. How's your wheezing?

Guy18, excellent report. Glad you liked Lugano. But I thought you had planned to stay at the Pestalozzi--why the hotel change?

enzian--this area of Italy (the Valtellavena or something like that) was featured in Travel and Leisure last year, and I was immediately taken with the hotel (whose picture appeared in the article) and the description of the area. As it turned out, I think the Bregaglia Valley of Switzerland, just a few miles away, is far nicer. So there's a lesson in there somewhere, I guess. I'd only recommend the Palazzo Salis in Chiavenna for a night. Not the coziest place as you can tell, and Chiavenna is worth only a half day's visit (but if you go, keep in mind that the Chiavennese take siesta VERY seriously).

LovesItaly--LOL on the other possible reason for the signora's distance. That's far more realistic!

Schuler--My wheezing is back. Do you think I could use this in order to get working permits for the E.U.???? Or perhaps someone has two daughters for P and I to marry?? (joke)

BTilke--Good memory. I ended up changing my itinerary, and the Pestalozzi had no availability for the night I needed. In the end, I'm glad, as the Federale, while much more expensive, was terrific!

Hello. Arriving late to this thread, but reading your report while I treat myself to an small escape from school work. I'd love to read more of your impressions of the area between San Salvatore and Morcote, so any details that come to you will have an audience here. And I got such a kick out of your mention of the frescos in the Lugano churches. Later, J.

Hi all,

I enjoyed so much reading your report, Guy. I rarely get the chance to rave about this region (Chiavenna/Soglio) here on Fodors. Oh, the siesta in Chiavenna! Yes, they take it seriously. On my first visit there (only a day trip from the Engadin) I arrived by noon and found the town sleeping. It slowly woke up at 3 pm, but the bus went at 4 pm ... it was boring, but I decided to come back. I thought the old town was interesting, San Lorenzo church is indeed a gem with its cloisters. Had delicious ice cream on a terrace hanging over the river ...

Here is the summary of what my Bregaglia guide book says about Palazzo Salis in Chiavenna:
Faded facade, but well proportioned Baroque Palazzo. Large hall with high ceilings is open for events and exhibits, in summer also for visitors. Large bedroom with fireplace and mirrors. Excellent breakfast. Signora Graziella is a retired teacher, together with her husband Alberto Carnazza (whose mother bought the one floor of the palazzo 50 years ago) she wants to bring history and beauty of this house closer to the guests.

I also like Luzern very much. Ah, yes, the Jesuit church - if I recall correctly it is the earliest Baroque church in Switzerland. There is a very similar one Jesuit church in Solothurn, almost a copy.

Ah, the Nordsee in Zürich. I am surprised. Hm, let the folks in Zürich pay more, so we can pay less in Dresden. hahaha!

Anxiously waiting to go back to Soglio,

Ingo
