Trip Report Munich and Fussen

My wife and I (mid fifties) spent 2 weeks in Europe. 3 nights in Munich, 4 nights in Fussen, 3 nights in Prague and 4 nights in London. I will submit 3 reports.

Travel day, RDU-PHL-LHR-MUC arrived Munich around noon. We took the train from airport to Muenchen’s Hauptbaunhof . We bought a 3 day group ticket for the entire network at:
http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/homepage/index.html They have a great APP that helps you get around.

Day 1
Checked into the Fleming Hotel, right across the street from the Train station and easy walk to Marienplatz. The hotel had air conditioning problems. No AC on the first night, great AC on day 2 after reporting the problem and then no air on day 3. Not just our room but the lobby and dining room too.

After cleaning up we walked to the Marienplatz and did Rick Steve’s walking tour, download the tours before leaving home.

Dinner at a Greek restaurant, we felt like we would have plenty of German fare in the days ahead. This restaurant was very good and you could tell a lot of locals were there too. Easy to get to on the train.

Day 2
We started our day by taking the tram to the English Gardens and then jogging in the gardens. We had the most beautiful weather, the locals had said the month of May was nothing but rain and we had blue skies and 80 degrees. We saw the surfers surfing the stream that runs through the park. Great way to start the day.
After breakfast we took the tram to the Nymphemburg Palace. We walked the beautiful gardens and then toured the palace. http://www.schloss-nymphenburg.de/englisch/palace/
For lunch we went to a Bier Garten right across the street from the Palace and it was very good. Restaurant Metzgerwirt
In the afternoon we finished our Munich walking tour.
Dinner at Salt, also very good. http://saltrestaurant.de/

Day 3
Today we went on a bike tour with Mike’s bikes. Our guide Tony was very good, it’s more touring than biking but a great way to see the city. We had to take a couple of detours as this was a holiday, Corpus Christi. There was a Mass in front of the New Town Hall and then a parade through the streets. On the tour we saw many sites and headed to the Englisch Garten. We saw the surfers again, nude sunbathers and a crowd at the biergarten. Tony our guide talked all of us but two to strip down to our underwear and float in the stream that runs through the park. The water was 56 degrees! It’s a 3 minute float, lots of fun. I wish we had more time in Munich as it would be fun to rent a bike and follow the Isar river out of town. We did the Superior Tour which met at 9:30 and ran to around 2:30 https://www.mikesbiketours.com/munich/
On the tour we met a couple who’s tour to Linderhoff was cancelled because of the G7 summit in Garmish, a town we’re scheduled to visit tomorrow. More on this later.

Dinner at Pfistermuehle we saw this restaurant on our walking tour and thought it looked nice. It was very fine dining and you needed a reservation, many were turned away. http://www.pfistermuehle.de/

Day 4
Moving day, we picked up a car close to the Hotel rented through Europcar. Very smooth transaction. GPS got us out of town on our way to Linderhoff without any problems. But the next thing you know the Polizei have a road block and making everyone exit the Autobahn due to the G7 summit in Garmish. So we took small back roads to Oberammergau and then Linderhof Palace. Garmish is off our itinerary at this point. The palace was beautiful, there were only 4 of us on the English tour, no one was there due to this summit mess and the possible protestors, lucky us.
When we left Linderhoff we took a right and traveled to Fussen via Austria, what a beautiful drive. We came across the most beautiful lake Plansee. We stopped on the side of the road and had the lake to ourselves.
Arrived in Schwangau and checked into our B&B that we loved. Full kitchen, dinette , separate large bedroom and a sun porch. All for less than 100 euro a night. They had top of the line bikes you could use for 5 euro a day. This family treated us like family. We can’t say enough. http://www.braun-bayern.de/index.html We booked through booking.com
Very good dinner at Il Pescatore in Fussen reservations a must http://www.ilpescatore-fuessen.de/
Mind you at this point all of our meals have been outside! We are having the best weather.

Day 5
Tour to Neuschwanstein we took a tour as I didn’t book the castle early enough and it was sold out. Our guide was great and we had no lines. Another absolutely beautiful day. We enjoyed the castle very much. http://www.europeancastlestours.com/
Our guide walked us through town after the tour and dropped us at Restaurant Fruhlingsgarten, very good. Can you tell we like to eat?

After the Castle tour we drove out to the Church in the meadow.

For dinner we ordered a pizza and salad and ate in our apartment, we had our first rain this evening. http://pizzeria-sanmarco.de/de/

Day 6
Today we biked into Fussen and around Lake Alpsee. The ride around the lake was difficult at times and we had to walk the bikes. We then biked to the base of Mt. Tegelberg and took the cable car to the top. Some folks hike up and ride down, but we road up and down. Beautiful views at the top.
Dinner at Fruehlings Garten, we loved our lunch so much we went back.

Day 7
We drove through the Austrian Alps to Lindau. Had a wonderful lunch and then took a boat ride on Lake Constance. The lighthouse and Lion at the harbor entrance is very impressive. Today started off a little gloomy but then cleared to a beautiful afternoon. Our weather has been unbelievable.
Dinner at Il Pescadore again!

Day 8
Another travel day. Uneventful ride back to Munich, turned in our car and boarded a Train for Prague.
As soon as we pull out the station the ticket taker said we have a big problem, this train isn’t going to Prague. Turns out the tracks were under construction in the Czeck Republic so we would only be going as far as Schwandorf. In Schwandorf we boarded buses that took us to Pilsen, where we boarded another train to Prague. We arrived in Prague only 15 minutes later than originally scheduled.
To be continued…

Thanks for posting this report and glad you enjoyed the Nymphenburg as well as the Pfistermuehle. Since we normally stay in the Platzl that restaurant is particularly familiar to us.
