Hi Ziana, where in Italy are you planning on visiting? Personally I would not go in August unless I was in the Dolomites. August in Italy is so hot and humid. That is why any Italian that is able to either heads to the mountains or the seaside, to get out of their cities.

Certainly August. It's hot, and the Italians take the whole month off. This means the coastal areas are packed and the cities are deserted, with even some restaurants closing for the holiday season.

I agree that it is hot and humid in many parts of Italy in August; it is more pleasant up in the Dolomites and around the lakes IMO.
To say that "nobody goes to Italy in August" is pretty absurd considering that a lot of Europeans who take vacations in August do so in Italy.
It is true that some businesses close but many don't and the main sites certainly do not.
It may not be the ideal time to go but better to go then than not at all.

Hello Rex, personally I loved your post! And sure got the humor of it.
It reminded me of the saying "A club that will admit me as a member is not up to my standards" - or something like that?
Anyway, I will state again, IMO I would not plan trips to large cities in August. No way. As much as I love Italy this is one month I do not want to be there unless I am in the mountains or at the seaside. Just answering you question Ziana.

I don't think anyone said no one goes to Italy in August.
In August, the cities are packed with foreign tourists, with barely an Italian in sight.
The coasts and Lakes are packed with Italians (and I mean PACKED, like sardines).
Take your pick.

Rome and Venice is on my 'MUST SEE' list. Time of the year - whenever you think it is 75 degree or so...
Suggestions however appreciated.

I went to Italy in November a few years ago and my only regret was the Aqua Alta. We lost a day in Venice because the water was so deep, even too deep to use the elevated planks. Other parts of Italy were fine, but I would avoid Venice in November.

You've all gotten me wondering...
I've been to Italy only in late Sept-early Oct. Am contemplating a trip next early March.
None of you have mentioned the disadvantages of going late winter--shorter days, higher probability of rain, cold temps. It's true crowds would be less. Do you not think that the chances of glorious weather in August offset the poorer weather at other times?

Patience Ziana, like a disfunctional family your question has to be discussed, rediscussed, argued over with a bit of crumbling here and there. If it wasn't you wouldn't be getting the best advice.
But, to pull you back into the discussion. Where in Italy do you want to go???? Italy has microclimates.
