Trip Insurance: is it worth it for a six week trip to Italy?

This summer our family of four is touring Italy and we have spent a lot of money already on flights and apartment rentals. Is it a good idea to get trip insurance. Or is it more of a rip off?

It is not a rip off if you need. The bigger question is how much is at risk - non-refundable deposits, non-refundable tickets, etc. That is what you insure. And there are different types of insurance - trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical, etc., - so be sure you read the fine print and understand the difference. Expect to pay abut 5% premium for the amount of dollar coverage. You can look at policies at insuremytrip or squarejaw.com

And of course, if you damage your rental car, you will thank your lucky stars for the insurance.

Your policy should also cover lost luggage insurance (probably the most likely "occurrence.")
Also, consider if you should need medical care or medical evacuation or even repatriation of remains. Not something you want to even think about, but you never know. In a sense, all insurance is a waste of money until you need to make a claim. Then it's very important to have it and to know how to make a claim.

You shouldn't travel overseas without travel insurance. What would happen if one of you ended up in hospital and had huge bills? Or if you were involved in a car accident and someone sued you? A million things could go wrong but probably won't.

It's peace of mind. Just be grateful if you never claim on it.

Six weeks is a long time. Life is full of things we can't anticipate, whether at home or abroad.

The small cost involved for travel insurance can save you thousands of dollars if you have an accident, become ill or have to rush home because a close family member has fallen seriously ill.

Unless your US health care insurance covers you in Europe you should get health care insurance. Also insurance to pay for the rest of you to stay/travel home should one of your party fall ill/be hit by a bus/trip over a cobblestone/fall in a canal.

Insuring your luggage is a good idea.

Given the price of a trip to Italy for 4 people travel insurance is a minor expense, but an essential one.

Oh and make sure if you are planning on driving in Italy that all those doing so have an IDP - which is compulsory there.

BEFORE you get any policy you need to know what the conditions are and what is covered and to what extent.

First, you say you've "already spent a lot of money" and there are some insurance programs out there which require you to purchase within so many days of having purchased your airfare, etc.

Second, cancellation coverage depends on the policy. Some policies are very restrictive as to just what CAUSES for a cancellation are and are not included.

We have used trip insurance in the past mainly for the medical evacuation features. We have also traveled many times with no coverage and been fortunate enough not to have needed it.

Big proponent of comp trip insurance img.com good prices for me last. $1-2/pppd for comp cover not bad. quotewright.com good comp site. Be sure and get AM best rated A companies only.Things are financially collapsing in Italy and Greece now. Greece just went on strike it is going to be a rocky financial summer of discontent in the south. I am headed over there all April I never leave home without it. Saved me thousands during the Iceland Volcano fiasco a couple of years ago no one saw that coming. I never take the tour company or airline insurance almost always a rip just cut out the middle man and get my own comp cover.

Good luck!

BTW, trip insurance has nothing to do with car rental insurance.
