Not having used any kind of travel agency and having booked everything on my own from hotels to the ferries to the tours etc. I'm a little nervous that if for some reason the plane or ferries have issues I'll be in trouble and could lose $$ on bookings I've paid for. Has anyone used any kind of travelors insurance that they could recommend to give me a little piece of mind?

Start by looking at insuremytrip.com, where you can compare the offerings of a dozen or so companies. You decide which perils you want to be insured against --Medical emergency, trip interruption, theft--and see how the diferent policies stack up.

The trip insurance through STA travel is a GREAT deal...And they are very reliable with claims. I just booked through them - I think it was $125.00 for 2 people for my trip. I would highly recommend them...

You should be aware that you can;t wait until the last minute to buy insurance - since they're afraid people wait until people know there's a problem and then insure. Typically they want you to buy insurance within a couple of weeks of making the bookings.

It may be possible to get insurance closer to the date of your departure - but it might get VERY expensive.

And be sure to check their list of companies that they won't cover. For instance, I asked my insurance company if they would cover my Alitalia tickets, if they had gone out of business prior to my trip.

Their answer: Alitalia has been our "not covered list" for years, so too bad for you.

Luckily, I did not need it in the end, but I will be sure to check for this in the future.

I use AIG TravelGuard.

I took a chance and didn't buy travel insurance...mainly out of ignorance....I just didn't fully understand how to go about it and what to expect it to cover. I think I will in the future, the peace of mind might be worth it.

One of the best websites for travel insurance comparison is www.squaremouth.com I can't say enough about this site; you will be able to compare different companies and see which one suits you best. One word of advice is to buy travel insurance within 10 days of your first deposit for the trip you are taking. In doing so, you get coverage for pre-existing conditions. In our case, it has more to do with pre-existing conditions of our elderly parents, which could cause us to cancel our trip.
