Trip from rome to amalfi
 

Hi,
My husband and I are going to be taking a trip from Rome to Amalfi leaving on April 3 and returning on April 6th. What is the best method of travel (easiest)?

Though i think there may be buses Rome to Sorrento i don't know much about them

but the train is straightforward, cheap enough and has about twice hourly departure possibilities

2 routes

1- Train from Rome to Naples Central (1.5 hrs on fastest trains) then change to CircumVesuviana narrow-gauge trains from central station to Sorrento, end of the line, then hop the very frequent and world'famous dramatic cliff-hugging buses to Amalfi

Boats Sorrento to Amalfi are also possible

2- Train Rome to Salerno, south of Naples, then hop the Amalfi buses from there to Amalfi - one less change but about the same time. Also boats Salerno to Amalfi in season

Take the fast train to Naples, then the ferry to Sorrento. The Circumvesuviana trains are worn, make many stops, and are noted for beggers and pickpockets (but a direct way to get to Pompeii if you are interested stopping there). The ferry takes less time, is cheap, and offers great views of the coast. You can take a bus or trolly to the boat dock. From Sorrento you can catch the bus to the Amalfi Coast. The bus leaves from the Circumvesuviana train station, which is a short but steep walk from the dock.

If worried about CircumVesuviana then i'd go via Salerno route

otherwise in Naples have to Schlepp yourself and bags to a bus, tram or taxi - go a few miles to the port, get the next boat - they do not run nearly as frequently as the 2-4/hr Naples-Sorrento train

then in Sorrento go from port up steep path to town center for bus

IMO much more seamless Rome-Salerno by highspeed train then boat or bus to Amalfi

The ferry docks are abt 3 blks S of the Salerno train station.

Much nicer than taking the bus to Amalfi.

How long is the trip by train/ferry from Rome to Amalfi? Can it be done as a day trip?

I'm agreeing with Ira... We did both ways on a recent trip to the AC and found the Salerno option to be a tad longer, but more relaxing and rewarding.

EsqLady - Rome-Salerno takes about 2.5 hrs.

The Amalfi Coast is feasible as a day trip if you leave Rome before 7a.m. It's a long day.

After taking the train from Rome to Naples, you can also take the ferry from Naples (Molo Beverello) to Amalfi.

Right. So if one takes the train from Rome to Salerno and there are no ferries... Seems simpler to go through Naples..

Hi, It would be easier and more relaxing to take the train from Rome to Salerno takes about 2.5 hrs.
Then just out side train station is the bus that will take you to
Amalfi, I think about an hour ride. No Schlepping bags very far lol
