Trip from Madrid to the Basque country
 

We are going to visit the Basque country in June, and would like to go to the
Pyreness, for two days.
Our itinerary is as follows: Madrid - Logroño, Hondarribia, Pyreness, Zaragoza and
back to Madrid. We need help in Pyreness, as where to stay, and what to visit., so
we are looking foward for suggestions and orientation in this area of Spain.

I am no expert, but we spent a few days in the Pyreness, just outside of Pamplona several years ago. We visited counsins and the villages of my grandparents. These towns were between Pamplona and Roncevalles, along the Camino de Santiago. There are small inns and rural houses in the towns. Very charming and different than the coast.

We also spent time near Logrono in a small wine town. Very charming. Hope this info helps.

Are you going to miss San Sebastian, probably the most beautiful city in Europe?

Yes if you've never been to San Sebastian it's a must see.

It would be helpful to know how much time is alloted for each city. I agree San Sebastian is a must!

Of course I am not missing San Sebastian, but we are staying
in Hotel Obispo in Hondarribia, and doing day trips to
San Sebastian, Biarritz, etc...
We are also looking for hotels in the Pyrenees, and in Zaragoza, any suggestions??

We stayed in our cousin's village of Lintzoain, which is between Pamplona & Roncevalles. They converted an old home into apartments that they rent out as a "Casa Rural".

Personally, I'd base myself in San Sebastian versus Hondarribia. I've based myself once in Hondarribia (staying at the Hotel Obisbo) and 3 times in San Sebastian. The Hotel Obisbo was very nice but there wasn't much going on in Hondarribia in the evenings.

We are staying in Hondarribia, at the Obispo, because my sister
stayed there a few years ago, and enjoyed a lot. We are senior
cictizens, so we enyoyed a nice dinner, and maybe listen to
some music, but we are day persons., so its O.K.
Do you have any suggestions for the Pyrenees and Zaragoza?

i found an old thread from you where you were planning a trip back in 2005 to Santander, Picos, Oviedo, etc. I am now planning to go back to Oviedo. Could you let me know at what hotel you stayed there and if you liked it? Thanks!

The Pyrenees, on the Spanish side, runs from Navarra through Aragon to Catalunya. The closest place to stay on the way to Zaragoza, if you want to drive through the Pyrenees, would be north of Jaca, in the area around Sallent de Gállego and Formigal.
