Trieste and Koper

cruise stop in Koper in September. thinking of taking side trip to Trieste from there as we have a full day (10 hrs) and have not read too many things to do in Koper. Anyone taken the bus, train or boat to Trieste from Koper? things to not miss? Also posted this under Slovenia.....

Trieste is a sympathic town, but there isn't too much to do there. You may visit the Naval Museum, the Miramare castle and the fortress.
Be aware that there are almost no buses between Capodistria and Trieste on Sunday (there aren't not many anyway).

Places to visit from Capodistria/Koper (all in Slovenia):
Pirano/Piran
Caves of San Cassiano/Skocjan
Stud of Lippizza/Lipica
Caves of Postunia/Postojna

I'm pretty sure Piran is closer by bus than Trieste. I stayed in Piran for a few days and then went to Trieste on my way to Verona. Piran is a very pretty seaside town with a castle ruin up above it that you can climb for great views. I really enjoyed the town. I went there after Ljubljana and if I remember correctly the bus stopped in Kopor on the way. I think about a half hour away. Sounds like a great day trip. Trieste was nice too, nicer than I expected but it's a large city and not on the same level - touristically speaking - with other Italian cities.

Here's my trip report - you'll need to scroll down to get to the relevant parts. http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...e-slovenia.cfm

My photos of Piran are here: (they are at the end of the gallery) http://www.pbase.com/annforcier/slovenia

If you like caves, there is an enormous cave just near Trieste. I visited it about 20 years ago - it was really spectacular - worth a visit. The tourist office will have info about it - grotto gigante.
