This is a helpful post. Is it safe to assume we can buy same-day train tickets from Venice to Rome even in late July-early August? Do the trains get over-booked? Thanks.

The Eurostar trains (which require seat reservations) can get full, especially on weekends. And it can be a real drag standing all the way from Venice-Rome on an InterCity train. As you'll be there during high season, it really would be best to purchase tickets a few days ahead (if at all possible). I'm assuming that you'll be staying a few days in Venice, then moving to to Rome? Once you land/arrive in Venice, either go to train station or a travel agency to purchase your tix to Rome.

a-z, thank you. We will be in Italy several days before we need the Eurostar so sounds like we can wait until we are in the country. Just need a place to sit, and stash the luggage.

I have 6 - $100.00 gift certificates from Rail Europe (value $600.00).

While in Italy we will be traveling, by train, 7 different times during our 19 day trip.

I went to the Rail Europe site and decided that the "Italy Flexi Rail Card Saver" is my best buy .

There will be 2 of us traveling and we will do our traveling all within Italy and within the same month.

The cost for first class is $284.00
per person.

Am I making the BEST choice?

thanks
