trekking in the dolomites

We are going on a 4-day trekking holiday in the dolomites starting in Vigo di Fassa. We are then heading to lake garda to a town called tremosine. I was wondering what the huts are like in the dolomites - i.e what you need to bring, how much they cost, what is the food like, toilet facilities, sleeping arrangements, etc. Perhaps someone could fill me in on this. Also, what kind of temperatures can we expect. We are travelling beg august.

Thanks

Rosie

Rosie:

I just got back from a quick 3 day visit to the Dolomites. We didn't have time to do any serious hiking so I can't really help with any true back country questions. I can say that in all the huts etc i saw, the facilities were really good. Good food, good beer/wine/coffee. We were there a week ago and it was quite a bit warmer than we expected (we were in the Ortisei area).

We are planning on returning and having our entire vacation in the Dolomites

Thats great. Thanks for your reply. Myself and my husband did a lot of walking before and are now introducing our ten year old daughter to the mountains. So hopefully it will be a good experience for all concerned. Hope you enjoy your return trip.

Can anyone suggest which is the best hiking shoes for the dolomites? I have been looking at Lowa and Meindl..was planning to go for Meindl Peru Lady GTX (light hiker). We plan to do day hiking from refuge to refuge for 2 days. But I would like to have shoes which can last me also while trekking the Himalayas. Any advice will be great!
