Trekking Hadrian's Wall in the footsteps of Roman soldiers

The October issue of Smithsonian arrived today with an eight page article on Hadrian's Wall.

For those who don't have access to the magazine, a subscription is $38, the article is at :

It's a great experience to explore that area.

We drove - but stopped at several places along the way. You just have to be prepared for the weather. It was late June and the high temp was about 48 - plus drizzly and windy. We were wearing all of our summer layers - and it reinforced my habit of never traveling to europe without a sweater (except southern Spain after May).

For what it's worth, when I visited I got sunburnt! It's not particularly high up, but the central part runs along the hill tops and is exposed to whatever weather there is: and the winds.

So interesting! We were just at Vindolanda at the beginning of May this year and it was freezing! You are right - the winds are crazy! Very interesting site though.

Even if you have a car you may want to investigate hopping the Hadrian's Wall Bus, which scoots to far-removed from each other key spots along the wall, which IME can only actually be seen in a relatively few places - this ain't no Wall of China but still a fascinating travel experience for me
