Treis-Karden 4 days and Trier 2 days?

I have found a nice house in Treis-Karden which is a 1 minute walk from the train. I also found a nice apartment in Trier for the last 2 nights in Germany.

Does anyone have any opinions on the location of Treis-Karden? It looks like a nice small town for our base, and we could day trip to Cochem. We would like a smaller town to have as our base.

There will be 5 females traveling together, and we are on a budget. The hotels in Cochem were too expensive. This house would be booked through airbnb, and it has very nice reviews. The owner doesn't speak English, so it should be quite an experience

Thank you for the help!

IMHO Colmar only really offers benefits for the tourist in as much as there are loads of hotels and public transport stops there. Any of the other towns are ok along the Mosel and all I'd llok for is 4 restaurants (for a different meal each night and good access to the train (possibly boat lines as well). TK has train and restaurants so will do fine.

Not speaking German would add to the fun! Just ensure you have a guide with words like "towel" in it. In a crisis there will be someone in the town.

Lots of fine wandering http://www.treis-karden-mosel.de/ and of course you get a bike path past your door http://tourismus.treis-karden.de/tre...rismus/Radeln/

The river boats are here https://www.k-d.com/ you will struggle with the timetable (everyone does)

Where are you staying in Trier? It is very extended along the river and some parts are not so useful for those on holiday. I recommend the south side of the river and towards Olewig rather than the east. Also, when are you there as timing the local wine festivals can be an art. http://www.mosellandtouristik.de/en/

The house in Trier is a 5 minute walk from the old town. I don't have the exact address but it is by the intersection of streets Nordallee and Palinstrabe. We will be there may 18 and may 19, 2015. It looks like this is in the east side in the middle of the city.

We have been practicing German, but I'm not doing very well! Lol. I will make a list of important words like towels!

Deb -when are you going? if you've got a month or so, you could try to get hold of the Michel Thomas beginners' german course [cassette tapes or CDs] from your library or even e-bay. That will give you the basics.

one advantage of german is that once you've learnt how to pronounce a sound, it always [with very few exceptions] stays the same. also the grammar in the beginning stages is quite easy. so even if you only learn a few phrases, they should and you in good stead.

"Does anyone have any opinions on the location of Treis-Karden?"

It's OK. Not much there in T-K, but not unattractive. And at least it is near the station and both Cochem and Moselkern (for the walk to Burg Eltz.) There are some chain grocery stores (Norma is one) across the bridge in the "Treis" part of town and a bit further up - a bit of a walk from your rental and a consideration since you'll probably be doing at least some meals "at home." You may want to pick up a few things on the way.

You might want to just stay in T-K the entire time instead of moving everyone and their stuff to Trier for just 2 nights. It's less than an hour to Trier by RE train from T-K for a day trip - not bad even if you have to go there twice - (about €40 round trip for all 5 with a day pass.)

If this is where you're staying, you might wish to book directly with the owners, which sometimes yields better pricing than through a middle-man, and often requires no deposit up front (I've rented apartments often and never paid a deposit in Germany):

Ferienhaus Barz
Sankt-Castor-Straße 60
56253 Treis-Karden
Telefon: +49 (0) 2672.2996

[email protected]

Be cautious about cancellation policies wherever you book. You are responsible under German Law for rental costs for ALL days that you book, whether you pay a deposit or not. If you book a week for $600, the law says you pay $600 if you cancel or fail to show. Only if the owner has his/her own less stringent cancellation policy might you have any rights to cancel without this penalty - so make sure you inquire about this beforehand.

Thank you Fussgaenger for all of the info. I really appreciate it! I will try to contact the owner directly and ask about the rate if we book directly. That may be the same place we are looking at.

I have an iphone app for German, but I really just want to learn travel horses. It's difficult to learn the verb tenses. I may try my local library!

yes, do try the library. IME it's very difficult to learn phrases in a vacuum and to start with you really only need the present tense, anyway.

Treis-Karden is nice as all the Mosel is but not nearly as dreamy as nearby Cochem - Trier is not cute at all but a modern city rebuilt from WW2 rubble - it has some riveting sites but I'd base in one place and take the train or boat or bus or bike to other Mosel places.

One less packing and unpacking and Trier is NO way compares in romance with Cochem or Treis-Karden - for one thing its Mosel front is desultory and not even apparent from much of the town - there is nothing scenic about the large drain-type river in Trier.

One base a lot easier than two.

I've taken hundreds of folks on trips thru Trier in the past and though everyone loved one day there when we stauyed two days they found little to do - so we eneded up cutting a day off Trier. You could day trip from Trier to Luxembourg City for the day and find that unique place nice for about half a day - one of Europe's physically most gorgeous cities as a wide deep gorge bisects it.
