Travestere or Colloseo area. Help decide.
 

Have to make a quick decision to stay in one of the places. I know other places are favored, but if you had only these two choices which would be better.

2 30-40 years old couples and my BF mother. So we are a party of five with one person 60 years old, but who can walk.

Our first visit to Rome and the other three having first visit to Europe from Australia. We are sightseer's and photographers, not shoppers.

I am older than sixty too and I can assure you that I can walk, run, play tennis, and so forth...and I love theTrastevere.

While it is a "must visit", I would never base my stay in the Colloseo area.

Trastevere can encompass a large area, especially by people tryig to sell hotel rooms or real estate. Make sure you are walking distance to Santa Maria in Trastevere and NOT the Trastevere Metro station.

Agree with Graziella5b, Trastevere would be my choice of the two locations. Incidentally, I too am an aging ambulator!

Both these aeras can cover a lot of territory. Can you share the exact locations?

Yes, at first glance Trastevere sounds better to me, but it really depends on where in Trastevere and where near the Colosseum.

I stayed in the Trastevere area last year and loved. We were at Trilussa Palace and right across the street from the tram stop

LOL. On the walking. My BF's father is also 60 but is not a walker, but I know he is one of the rare ones these days.

Plantar Fascitis and sciatica etc...

That is why he is not joining us.

The apartment is only 200 meters from the station of Trastevere,meters from the station of Trastevere, from where you can take direct lines to the Vatican with n.1 stop for Leonardo da Vinci Airport (Fiumicino) and for the central train station (Termini), and from where buses and trams depart for all areas of the city.

Is this the "bad part"?

Do you have street names/addresses? I like parts of both areas, and have stayed in Trastevere.

Trastever is a great place to stay but you probably dont want to stay near the station. While there is the #8 tram that can take you to and over the tiber, the Tratevere station is not within decent walking distance to all the great restaurnats in Trastevere or any of the places you will want to visit in Rome.

The area around the Trastevere train station is not a "bad" part, as I recall, but it is pretty far from the charming area (Ponte Sisto, Santa Maria, etc) that Trastevere proponents love.

Lol, also on the walking. I am 60 this year, and have recently completed the Rome marathon (again). Perspective is such a strange thing. I'm old enough to be amused rather than annoyed, and congratulation your 60 year old in his/her ability to walk.

If you 30 to 40 year-old couples can manage to limp across the bridge with your bones creaking, I'd stay in Trastevere. I find the trip across the river adds something special to my visits to Roma. And I hope to visit there a few more times before I completely expire at 61 (just kidding...)!

I also got a chuckle out of the "60 and ok to walk". But the truth is, I am 52 and I can't walk like I used to when I was 30 or even 40!!

the Trastevere station is definitely quite a distance (and tram ride) from most of the sights you will want to see. do you have the address for the other option near the Colosseum?

Crrect, if you are staying in Trastevere then you want to be closer to Santa Maria in Trastevere and the Ponte Sisto.

It is very counter-intuitive, but, unlike every other city in the world, if you close to a subway station then are not close to anything.

How quick? If you have a day or two (or 3), consider looking at these apt. reviews. Come back with specific apartment web-links for detailed feedback from the peanut gallery here.

In the &quot;description&quot; column, look for the words Trastevere (most of these are in the <i>good</i> part of Trastevere) or Campo dei Fiori. Ignore anything with a &quot;No&quot; in the &quot;*&quot; column.

While visiting the coloseum is a &quot;must&quot;, I don't care for the surrounding area as a home base - just my opinion.

Thanks all. I have a couple days so will try squeeze out the addresses. And no offense. I was just people would read this and say -- too far to walk.

So wanted to emphasize we are all fit. Age makes no differenc. I am 40 and a lot fitter than some of my younger couch-potato cousins.

Don't give up on finding an apartment in Trastevere. Just not near the train station. Closer to the Tiber there are wonderful areas that are part of Trastevere that are full of charm, close to lots of great restaurants, and easy walking distance to most of the sites you will want to visit.
