Travelling to Greece?-Aegean Airlines' Fall/Winter Discounts Now Available
 

If you are travelling in Greece from October 1, 2008 through March 31, 2009, Aegean Airlines is now offering discounted one-way airfares of 49 euro including taxes for all their domestic flights.

Aargh, that's annoying ... we just booked our tickets a couple of weeks ago for an October flight from Santorini to Athens, because the prices seemed to keep increasing the closer it got ... who knew it was going to become considerably cheaper rather than more expensive the closer it got? Oh well, live and learn I guess!

Still keep an eye out on the Aegean website. Sometimes there are schedule changes/cancellations. If that were to happen on your travel dates perhaps you could re-book at a lower fare.

This brings up a question, for me who hasn't been to Greece before. We are flying Aegean from Athens to Crete and then from Santorini back to Athens. Given that we have had at least 4 schedule changes on our flights from the US to Athens, I'm wondering how often Aegean is likely to change schedules and how we would know while we are traveling? Aegean is sending me promotional emails as we booked online, so will then notify us via email? Just curious because I haven't dealt with small airlines abroad before this trip. And yea, I'm with travelgirl. I booked ahead and paid 73 euro for Santorini to Athens, including taxes. I see that they're now offering 49 Euros for all destinations from Athens, including taxes!

If we go in early June, how soon should I book flights to islands? We are thinking Athens to Naxos or Mykonos, then to Santorini, then back to Athens.

They will notify you by email, but sometimes not right away. That's why I suggest that you keep an eye out on their website and contact them if you do see a schedule change that affects you. Give them your confirmation/reservation number, explain what you've found and request a change based on what you see is then available. They will do this at no extra charge. If you don't contact them they'll just make an arbitrary change for you and it might not work. By now they've probably worked out all the "bugs" in their scheduling and you won't be affected, but it never hurts to check in. Find an internet cafe wherever you go to do this.

Book as soon as you know your exact travel dates and when you find a fare you can accept. Understand that if you are planning to fly from Mykonos to Santorini using Aegean Airlines you will have to fly back to Athens first. They don't offer island-to-island flights. If you go to www.skyexpress.gr you will see that Sky Express does, but the schedule for Summer, 2009 won't be available until sometime next year.

Thanks BLL. I just checked the Aegean site and our flight out of Athens at 19:30 does indeed still exist on the date of our reservation. However, all the messing around that our US airline has done is actually getting us into Athens earlier than originally anticipated, at 10:20. Aegean has another flight to Chania at 14:35. What's our best strategy for getting on the earlier flight without losing our initial ticket price? I do believe we booked under the "saver" category on their website and I see that we get no credit for changes according to their table of code properties. However, it can't hurt to ask, right?

I always buy the cheapest ticket, and if there's unsold seating on an earlier flight I explain that I arrived earlier than first planned and ask to be boarded. I don't know what the 'official policy' is, but I've never had them refuse me or tack on any extra charges.
