Travelling to Androrra by car

Hi,

I am planning to drive to Andorra from Spain(Girona)in February. Does any one knows the quality of roads in that area? How safe is to drive in winter?
Also, given that I will arrive there in Girona late in the night, could somebody recommend a city/village/hostelo on the way to pass the night?

thanks

While I have never driven it in winter, the roads are good quality two-lane highways - - and I am betting that the constant traffic to shop at the (moderately tacky) duty-free outlets there will keep the roads passable, uinless it should be a really major snowfall.

Keep in mind that even in summer, there can be literally traffic clogs. I have only approached from Seu d'Urgell - - I didn't look at viamichelin to see if that is different from the roads approaching via Girona or not.

Best wishes,

Rex

Drove during ths summer from Barcelona, with stops at both Spanish and French towns along the way.
You have to be aware that these are mountain passes and there are lots of twisties and good 2-lane highways (except for the approach to Andorra where the customs checkpoints and duty-free shops are - multiple lanes here). I also remember seeing a few "caution when snowy" signs on the Pyrenees roads.

I just drove (2 weeks ago) in through the French side and out the Spanish side. The windy mountain roads on the border with France were scary, but luckily the weather had been warm enough. The altitude on the main road goes down gradually all the way to Andorra la Vella, and I believe it continues to drop out the other end into Spain. I don't think coming from spain should be a big problem, although I would carry chains or winter tires just in case...
