Travelling Saxony

Dear Friends,
We are 5 adults intending to arrive at Berlin on August 28,2007 and continue directly to Loebsal near Meissen staying there until September 6,2007 and then staying in Berlin for 3 days.Do you think that Loebsal is a good basis for travelling the whole Saxony region everyday ?
We would appriciate receiving your ideas and proposals for detailed itinerary.
We are mostly interested in folkloric sites and events as well as flea markets, shopping and panoramic routes.
Best regards and Many Thanks in advance. Yak

I think Loebsal is a bit out of the way, depending on what areas of Saxony you wish to visit. It's not near any autobahn, so you'll be on local roads wherever you go.

It'll take you about an hour drive from there to Dresden, and about 2hrs to get to the beautiful areas south of Dresden. Koenigstein & Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which are well worth a visit.

If I'm not mistaken the annual Saxon Wine Street festival is around the time your are visiting - 1st weekend in September, maybe 2nd. All the local wineries around Radebeul and Meissen open their doors for wine tasting, and many families spend the day on bicycles traveling the route. Very enjoyable.

Dresden itself makes a good base - easy to get in and out of by car, train or even steam ship, plus lots of great restaurants and activities.

Hopefully our resident, friendly Saxon, Ingo will chime in with further suggestions.

J62 is such a great resource for Saxony! There's not much to add.

I agree that Loebsal is not the ideal base for exploring the most beautiful parts of Saxony. I would try to find something in Dresden or a bit south.

You'll miss the weekend of the open wineries by a couple of days. The wine festivals are later in Sept. Bad timing! That weekend when you'll be here (2 Sept)is a horse parade in Moritzburg, a big event and well worth a visit: www.landgestuet-moritzburg.de

I have to look up other events in that time and get back to you later.

Panoramic routes are to find especially south of Dresden as J62 mentioned. The National Park 'Saxon Switzerland' is very, very scenic (bizarre sandstone formations). And so is the region east of Dresden called 'Oberlausitz' with charming villages full of beautiful houses, with rolling hills and interesting towns.

Do you plan to base yourself in one place and do day trips? Or would you consider two different bases?

Dear Ingo,
You all are great.
Our itinerary is flexible.
If the Wine festival is a 'must' we still can adjust our dates.
Regarding your qustion we can consider two different bases for our trips?
Awaiting your nice comments.
Best Regards. Yak
